Throat chakra
Viśuddha · विशुद्ध
Vishuddha means purified. Sixteen petals at the throat, the element space, and a name that comes from a story: the god who drank the poison of the world and held it in his throat rather than swallowing or spitting it out.

The seed sound
HAM
The most breath-like of the seed sounds, since h is the sound of air alone. Chanted with the chin slightly lowered it produces a clear buzz in the throat, which is the point.
Where it sits and what it carries
Vishuddha is a sixteen-petalled lotus at the throat, its petals carrying the sixteen Sanskrit vowels, which is a precise choice: vowels are the sounds that carry, the ones a voice can hold. The element is akasha, usually translated as ether or space, meaning the medium sound moves through rather than a substance.
This is the first centre past the heart, and the texts treat it as the beginning of the upper series. What happens below has to pass through here to become anything anyone else can hear.
In the modern colour scheme this is the sky blue of the series, sitting between the green of the heart and the indigo of the brow. The medieval sources give it smoky purple petals around a white circle, which is a different claim about a different feature.
Nectar and poison
Two stories sit behind the name. In the hatha literature, nectar drips continuously from bindu at the back of the head and is consumed by the fire at the navel, which is why the body ages. Practices like jalandhara bandha and khechari mudra are described as ways of catching it at the throat, and vishuddha is where that interception happens.
The other story is Shiva drinking the halahala poison churned from the ocean and holding it in his throat, which turned blue. Purified does not mean nothing bad got in. It means something difficult was held without being passed on.
What it looks like in a person
Modern teaching reads vishuddha as communication, which is right but incomplete. It covers speech, and equally the discipline of not speaking, and listening, which is the sense assigned to this centre.
The common pattern here is a mismatch between what is felt lower down and what comes out at the throat. Anger arrives as politeness, grief as a change of subject. That gap is what practice at this centre addresses.
How it reads
Balanced, overactive, blocked. A language for reflection rather than a diagnosis.
In balance
- Says the thing, in ordinary words
- Listens without preparing a reply
- Comfortable with silence in a conversation
- Voice that matches what is actually felt
Overactive
- Talks through every pause
- Opinions arrive faster than information
- Uses volume where precision would do
- Interrupts, then apologises, then interrupts
Blocked
- The important sentence never gets said
- Tightness in the jaw and neck
- Agrees out loud, disagrees inwardly
- Writes long messages instead of speaking
Voice changes, swallowing difficulty and thyroid symptoms are medical matters. The gland pairing here is a twentieth-century analogy, not a diagnostic tool.
Working with it
Practices at the throat are audible. Most of them make a sound on purpose.
-
Ujjayi breath
A slight constriction at the back of the throat on both inhale and exhale, producing a soft ocean sound. Five minutes, seated, without forcing the volume.
-
Chant HAM
Twelve rounds with the chin very slightly tucked, listening for the buzz to settle in the throat rather than the chest.
-
Humming
Bhramari, the bee breath: a long humming exhale with the ears lightly closed. The most reliable way to feel this region without straining it.
-
Say one true sentence
Pick a small thing you have been rounding off and say the accurate version out loud to the person concerned. This centre responds to that faster than to any breathing exercise.
