Second of the seven centres

Sacral chakra

Svādhiṣṭhāna · स्वाधिष्ठान

Svadhisthana means one's own dwelling place. Two fingers below the navel, six petals, the element water. Where the root centre asks whether there is ground, this one asks what you want to do with it.

The seed sound

VAM

Softer than LAM and pitched slightly higher. Practitioners are told to feel it low in the belly, in the region that moves when the breath is allowed to reach the bottom of the lungs.

Where it sits and what it carries

Svadhisthana is drawn as a six-petalled lotus around a white crescent, the shape assigned to water, with a makara inside it. Water is the element that takes the shape of whatever holds it, and everything about this centre follows from that: movement, appetite, responsiveness, the pull toward what tastes good.

It sits directly above the region governed by muladhara and shares the same downward wind. The two lower centres are usually worked together, which is why hip and pelvis practice serves both.

In the texts

The tantric sources give svadhisthana the deities Vishnu and Rakini, the seed sound VAM, and six petals carrying the syllables baṃ, bhaṃ, maṃ, yaṃ, raṃ and laṃ. Its association with taste follows the standard element scheme, where each element carries one sense.

The hatha manuals treat this region practically. Vajroli and the pelvic practices belong here, and so does the general instruction to moderate rather than suppress appetite. Suppression is not the classical recommendation. Redirection is.

What it looks like in a person

Modern teaching reads svadhisthana as the centre of desire and its expression: sexuality, pleasure, the willingness to want things out loud, and creative work in the sense of making something that was not asked for.

It is the centre most often described as blocked in people who are functioning well by every external measure. Competence at the root level, safety and routine and paid bills, can be maintained for years with nothing much moving above it. That flatness is what this centre names.

How it reads

Balanced, overactive, blocked. Descriptions of a felt state rather than a diagnosis.

In balance

  • Wants things and says so
  • Pleasure without guilt attached to it
  • Emotion that moves through and finishes
  • Making things for the sake of making them

Overactive

  • Appetite that runs the schedule
  • Emotional weather that swamps the room
  • Constant seeking of the next stimulation
  • Blurred boundaries in intimacy

Blocked

  • Flatness, nothing much appeals
  • Guilt attached to ordinary pleasure
  • Stiffness in the hips and low back
  • Creative work that never starts

Read these as prompts for reflection. Persistent low mood, pain or sexual difficulty belongs with a clinician, and this map is not a substitute for one.

Working with it

Water responds to movement. Practices here are fluid rather than held.

  1. Hip openers

Pigeon, bound angle, low lunge, held long enough to stop fighting them. The pelvis stores a great deal and gives it up slowly.

  2. Circular movement

Pelvic circles, standing or seated, in both directions, breathing through the mouth. Two minutes is enough to notice a change.

  3. Chant VAM

Twelve rounds with a hand resting below the navel, feeling for the vibration under the palm.

  4. Make something badly

Twenty minutes of drawing, cooking or writing with no plan for the result. The point is the wanting, not the artefact.
