Which practices work on udana?

The wind that rises. Seated at the throat and above, it carries speech, holds the body upright, powers effort, and in the older texts moves consciousness upward at the end of a life.

What it does

Udana is the wind of ascent, and its everyday functions all involve lifting: the voice, the spine held upright against gravity, the effort it takes to start something. Growth in children is attributed to it in the classical sources.

It is the wind most audible in practice. Any sustained sound in the throat is udana at work.

At the end

The Upanishadic accounts give udana a final job: at death, it is what separates the subtle body from the physical one and carries consciousness up and out, ideally through the aperture at the crown, and the direction it takes is said to set the trajectory of what follows. Practices aimed at that exit belong to specific lineages and are not taught casually.

The everyday version of the same idea is more useful. What rises when you speak is what you are putting into the world, and this wind is what carries it.

Working with it
