What is the Tarot?

The Tarot is a 78-card system that began as a 15th-century Italian card game and, over six hundred years, became the foundational text of Western esotericism and a modern tool for reflection. Its lasting power comes from its structure: a fixed, exhaustive set of images that any era can read its own meaning into.

A deck in two halves

Every tarot deck splits into two parts. The Major Arcana are 22 trump cards, from The Fool to The World, that trace the big archetypal turning points of a life. The Minor Arcana are 56 cards across four suits, and they handle the texture of everyday experience: work, feeling, thought and resource. Together they give a reader the full range, from the mythic to the mundane.

Four suits, four elements

The Minor Arcana divide into Wands (Fire), Cups (Water), Swords (Air) and Pentacles (Earth). This elemental mapping was formalised by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century, which tied each suit to one of the Kabbalistic Four Worlds — from the first spark of inspiration down to physical manifestation. Each suit runs Ace through Ten, then four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King.

The Fool's Journey

Read in order, the 22 Major Arcana form a single story, named the Fool's Journey by Eden Gray in the 1970s. The Fool (0) steps off a cliff into a new cycle and passes through three sets of seven cards: the formation of self, a descent into shadow and crisis, and a final integration that ends in The World. It is the same shape mythologist Joseph Campbell called the Hero's Journey.

The Rider-Waite-Smith standard

In 1909 Arthur Edward Waite and artist Pamela Colman Smith published the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Its breakthrough was the pictures: Colman Smith drew every Minor Arcana card as a full human scene instead of a bare arrangement of suit symbols. That turned an abstract occult puzzle into a deck almost anyone could read. Waite also swapped Strength (to VIII) and Justice (to XI) to line the trumps up with the zodiac. The deck became the global standard, and it is the reference used throughout Tarot Academy.

The structure of the Tarot

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck is the canonical reference used across Tarot Academy. Each deck reinterprets the same skeleton: 22 trumps and 56 suited cards.

The Tarot, from card table to inner map

A game before it was an oracle

The Tarot began as entertainment. In the courts of northern Italy in the 1430s and 1440s, wealthy families such as the Visconti and Sforza of Milan commissioned hand-painted decks of trionfi, or triumphs, for a trick-taking game not far removed from modern bridge. The oldest surviving cards, like the Visconti di Modrone deck held at Yale, have been dated to 1437–1442 from the watermarks in their stock. These were luxury objects: gold leaf behind the trumps and court figures, silver behind the pip cards, painted with members of the ruling houses in the dress of the day. Wear on the survivors shows they were shuffled and played, not just shelved.

The two-part structure that still defines the deck was in place from the start. Four suits (cups, swords, batons and coins) carried the everyday cards, and a set of 21 numbered trumps plus an unnumbered Fool sat above them. Those trumps became the Major Arcana; the suited cards are the Minor Arcana. The earliest complete 78-card deck to survive, the Sola Busca, already carried strange, alchemical imagery well outside the bounds of a card game.

How a parlour game became fortune-telling

The shift from game to divination happened in France. In 1781 the pastor Antoine Court de Gébelin published a sprawling history claiming the cards were the last surviving fragment of ancient Egyptian wisdom, a lost "Book of Thoth" carried through the centuries. There is no evidence for the theory, but it arrived during Europe's craze for Egyptian antiquities and it stuck. Around the same period the occultist Jean-Baptiste Alliette, writing as Etteilla, produced one of the first manuals for reading cards: he fixed a meaning for each card, defined the spread, and introduced the practice of reading reversed cards. Between them, they turned a deck of games into a tool for telling fortunes.

The Golden Dawn and the Rider-Waite-Smith deck

The deck reached its most systematic form in Victorian England. Eliphas Levi had already tied the 22 trumps to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the 22 paths of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, founded in London in 1888, built that hint into a full grid of correspondences. They mapped the whole 78-card deck onto the Tree of Life and fixed the elemental scheme the suits still carry: Wands to Fire, Cups to Water, Swords to Air, Pentacles to Earth. Each suit runs Ace through Ten and then four court cards.

That rigour called for new imagery. In 1909 Golden Dawn member Arthur Edward Waite and the artist Pamela Colman Smith published the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Waite swapped the numbers of Strength and Justice, moving Strength to VIII and Justice to XI, so the trumps would line up with the zodiac. Colman Smith did something more lasting: she illustrated every Minor Arcana card with a full human scene rather than a bare arrangement of suit symbols, which is why an Eight of Swords or a Ten of Cups reads at a glance. That single choice turned an abstract occult puzzle into a storytelling tool, and it is why the RWS deck is the reference used across Tarot Academy.

The Fool's Journey

Read in sequence, the Major Arcana tell one story. The author Eden Gray named it the Fool's Journey in the 1970s. The Fool, numbered 0, steps off a cliff into a new cycle and passes through three groups of seven cards. The first builds the self, meeting the Magician, the High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor and the Hierophant. The second turns inward through crisis and shadow, from the Wheel of Fortune through Death and the Devil. The third rebuilds, moving from the Tower's collapse to the hope of the Star and ending in the World. Joseph Campbell recognised the same shape in myth and called it the Hero's Journey.

The modern deck: projection and therapy

In the twentieth century the occult scaffolding loosened and a psychological reading took its place. Carl Jung attributed the cards' pull not to any hidden power but to archetypes drawn from the collective unconscious. For secular readers the deck is closer to a Rorschach test: 78 printed images with no power of their own, useful because an ambiguous, resonant picture invites you to project your own situation onto it. A growing number of therapists use tarot the same way, as a visual vocabulary that helps a client name a feeling, hold it at a safe distance, and talk about it. In every case the value sits with the reader, not the card.

The same openness makes the deck easy to misuse. On social platforms, short "collective readings" lean on the Barnum effect, the tendency to hear a vague, flattering statement as if it were written for you. Experienced readers, esoteric and secular alike, tend to steer questions inward: less "will they come back" and more "what am I projecting onto this, and what do I actually want." That is the deck at its most useful, a steady mirror rather than a crystal ball.
