Annamaya kosha

Annamaya kośa · अन्नमय कोश

Made of anna, food. The physical body, which the Upanishad describes as growing from food, living on food and returning to food, and which is where every practice has to begin whether or not the practitioner wants it to.

Made of what it eats

The Upanishad's argument is literal. Everything in this body arrived as food, was assembled, and will be returned to the ground where it becomes food again. Nothing here is permanent and nothing here is separate from the field it grew in.

That is not a dismissal. The text spends real attention on this sheath before moving inward, and later tradition follows: an unfed, unrested body makes a poor instrument for anything else.

What works here

Posture, movement, food, sleep and daylight. The whole of asana practice belongs to this layer, and so does most of what a doctor would recognise.

The common error runs in one direction: people bring problems that live at this layer to practices aimed at the ones above it. Meditation is a poor treatment for chronic sleep debt.
