The seven layers of the aura

The newest material in this library and the most widely taught. Seven layers of a field around the body, each paired with one of the main centres, assembled from Theosophical writing between 1880 and 1930 and given its familiar form by healers in the 1970s and 80s.

Where this model comes from

The seven-layer aura is not in the Sanskrit sources. It was assembled in English, between roughly 1880 and 1930, by writers in the Theosophical Society who were reading Indian texts alongside Western occultism and their own reported clairvoyance. Charles Leadbeater's Man Visible and Invisible (1902) and The Chakras (1927) are the two books that fixed most of it.

It reached its current form through Barbara Brennan's Hands of Light (1987), which systematised it into seven named layers alternating between structure and feeling, each paired with one of the seven centres, each with a reported reach from the skin. That is the version taught in most energy-healing training today, and the layer names on these pages are hers.

We include it, clearly labelled, for two reasons. It is what modern chakra teaching actually assumes, so leaving it out would make the rest of the library harder to use. And knowing that a model is a century old rather than a millennium old is useful information about how much weight to put on it.

How the seven are arranged

The layers alternate. Odd-numbered layers are described as structured, made of lines or grids: the etheric body, the etheric template, the ketheric template. Even-numbered layers are described as fluid and coloured: emotional, astral, celestial. The mental body sits between them as structured thought.

The first three are said to concern the physical world, the outer three the spiritual, and the astral body in the middle to connect them. Each layer is paired with the centre of the same number, so the etheric belongs with the root and the ketheric with the crown.

What can be said about it

No instrument has detected these layers, and reports of seeing them vary between observers in ways that are hard to reconcile. Anyone presenting the model as established fact is overstating it.

What can be said is that practitioners who work with the model report a consistent vocabulary for what they are attending to, and that the layered structure gives hands-on practice a sequence rather than a guess. That is a reasonable defence of a working model and not a claim about physics.

A note on health

Aura reading is not diagnosis. No layer of this model tells anyone whether they are ill, and treating a reading as medical information is the fastest way for this material to do harm. Energy work belongs alongside medical care.

The alternation, and what it is for

Odd layers are described as structured and even layers as fluid, and the pairing runs deeper than a pattern. The first and fifth are both grids, and the fifth is said to hold the pattern the first one copies. The second and sixth are both feeling, one personal and one without an object. The third is structured thought and the seventh is the structure of a whole life. The astral layer in the middle belongs to neither series and joins them.

Whether or not anything is out there, that is a well-made model: it repeats itself at two scales and puts the thing that connects them in the centre.

Biofield research, and what it does not show

The word biofield was coined in 1992 at a United States National Institutes of Health workshop, and it names a real research programme: the measurable electromagnetic and biophoton emissions of living tissue. Papers in that field are sometimes cited as confirmation of the aura. They are not. Measuring that a body emits weak electromagnetic radiation says nothing about seven layers, their reach, or their pairing with the chakras.

Kirlian photography is cited the same way and is worth naming directly. It records corona discharge in a high-voltage field, and what varies in the image is moisture, pressure and contact rather than a subtle body.
