The solar side
Pingala means tawny or reddish, and everything about the channel follows that colour: sun, heat, daylight, fire, the states that go with exertion. It winds around sushumna opposite ida and terminates at the right nostril.
The texts associate right dominance with digestion, physical work and anything that requires pushing. Eating a heavy meal while the right nostril is clear is standard advice in swara yoga.
Too much of it
A life spent in pingala is the ordinary modern condition: alert, productive, running warm, poor at stopping. The classical prescription is not to suppress it but to alternate, which is why the balancing practice rather than the cooling one is the standard teaching.
Signs of excess in this vocabulary are heat, irritability, appetite that outruns digestion and difficulty settling at night.
Working with it
Surya bhedana, breathing in through the right nostril and out through the left, is the direct practice. Short rounds, in the morning, and not in the hour before sleep. Practitioners with high blood pressure are usually steered to the balancing practice instead.
