Third of the five winds

Samana

Samāna · समान

The wind that gathers. Seated at the navel between the inward and downward winds, it brings what has arrived toward the centre and sorts what can be used from what cannot.

What it does

Samana is the wind of processing. Prana brings food, air and impression in; apana takes waste out; samana is what happens between the two. In Ayurveda it works directly with agni, the digestive fire, and the pair is treated as the hinge of physical health.

The same word, sam, gives us balance and equality. The gathering it names is not hoarding but bringing things level.

The metabolic reading

The extension to experience is old rather than modern. What is true of food is taken to be true of everything: a day, an argument, a piece of news all have to be broken down and assimilated, and doing that badly leaves residue.

That is why unprocessed experience shows up in this system as a navel problem rather than a head one.

Working with it

Kapalabhati and agni sara act directly here, both on an empty stomach and both easy to overdo. The quieter practice is to eat one meal without a screen, at a table, slowly, which sounds like advice from a different discipline and is exactly what samana practice amounts to.
