Beryl
The clearest lesson in the whole catalogue about what gem pricing actually measures. Beryl is beryllium aluminium silicate, and whether a crystal becomes an emerald worth thousands or an aquamarine worth a fraction of that depends on which trace metal happened to be present when it grew.

What holds the family together
Beryl is Be3Al2Si6O18, hexagonal, hardness 7.5 to 8. Pure beryl is colourless and is called goshenite. Everything famous about the family is a trace element:
Chromium or vanadium gives green, and that is emerald. Iron gives blue to blue-green, and that is aquamarine. Manganese gives pink, and that is morganite. Iron in a different oxidation state gives yellow, called heliodor. Caesium-rich material with manganese can give the intense red of bixbite, one of the rarest gems in existence.
Beryllium is a rare element in the crust, which is why beryl needs particular geology to form at all and why large clean crystals are uncommon. That scarcity is the family's real economic story.
The important structural fact is brittleness. Beryl is hard, meaning it resists scratching, but it is not tough, meaning it chips and fractures readily under impact. Emerald compounds this because the geology that supplies chromium also tends to fracture the crystal as it grows.
How it forms
Beryl forms in pegmatites, the coarse late-stage granites where rare elements concentrate and crystals have room to grow large. Aquamarine, morganite and heliodor almost all come from pegmatites, principally in Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan and Nigeria, and the crystals can be enormous.
Emerald is the exception and forms differently. Chromium and beryllium are geochemically unlikely partners, since chromium belongs with dark mantle-derived rocks and beryllium with granitic ones. Emerald requires an unusual meeting of the two, typically where hydrothermal fluids from a granite invade chromium-bearing schist, as in Colombia's black shale deposits and the Egyptian mines of Wadi Sikait worked since before 1500 BCE.
That violent chemistry is why almost every emerald contains fractures and inclusions, the mossy jardin that gemmologists accept as normal and that would condemn any other stone.
The stones of this family
- Emerald (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ with chromium, Mohs 7.5). Green beryl, mined in Egypt before 1500 BCE and in Colombia at world-class quality. Almost every emerald is fractured and oiled, and the trade treats that as normal.
- Aquamarine (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ with iron, Mohs 7.5). The sailor's stone since Rome, thrown to Neptune for calm water. Nearly all of it is heated to move the colour from green towards blue.
- Morganite (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈ with manganese, Mohs 7.5). Pink beryl, named in 1911 for the banker J. P. Morgan. No ancient tradition, a great deal of modern engagement-ring demand.
Trade names and lookalikes
Emerald treatment is the family's defining issue. The overwhelming majority of emeralds are filled with oil, resin or polymer to make their fractures less visible. Cedarwood oil is traditional and reversible; hardened resins are not. Disclosure of the degree of clarity enhancement is standard practice in good trade and absent in bad. A heavily filled emerald can lose its appearance in an ultrasonic cleaner or under a jeweller's torch.
Synthetic emerald has been grown by flux and hydrothermal methods since the 1930s and is chemically identical to natural. Sold honestly it is a legitimate and inexpensive stone; sold dishonestly it is fraud.
Morganite is nearly always heated to remove an orange cast. Aquamarine is nearly always heated to shift green towards blue. Both treatments are permanent and stable.
Watch for green glass, dyed beryl and green fluorite sold as emerald at the cheap end, and for triplets with a thin emerald slice over a lesser base.
Care that follows from the structure
Hardness 7.5 to 8 means beryl will not scratch easily, which misleads people about how careful to be. It chips, and emerald in particular breaks along its fractures under a knock.
Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on emerald. The vibration opens filled fractures and the heat drives out oil. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is the correct method, and even that should be gentle. Aquamarine and morganite tolerate cleaning better but should still not be steamed.
Morganite and some aquamarine can fade in prolonged strong sunlight, so a windowsill is not the place for them.
If you own an emerald ring, expect it to need re-oiling every few years if worn daily, and take it off for washing up, gardening and gym work.
