Chrysocolla
Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate, blue-green and soft enough to mark with a coin. Most of what is sold is chrysocolla in chalcedony, where silica has hardened the material into something workable. Its name is Greek, from chrysos for gold and kolla for glue, because it was used as a flux for soldering gold.

What it actually is
A hydrated copper silicate with a variable formula, usually given as approximately (Cu,Al)2H2Si2O5(OH)4 nH2O, orthorhombic or amorphous, hardness 2 to 4 in pure form.
Pure chrysocolla is far too soft and friable to work, which is why almost all material on the market is silicified: chalcedony has infiltrated it, raising hardness to around 6 or 7 and making it cuttable. That material is properly called chrysocolla in chalcedony, and gem quality examples are sold as gem silica, which is among the most valuable chalcedonies.
Chrysocolla frequently occurs with malachite, azurite and turquoise in the oxidised zone above copper deposits, and mixed material containing several of these is common.
Eilat stone, from Israel, is a mixture of chrysocolla, malachite and turquoise.
Being copper-bearing, it carries the same safety cautions as malachite.
Where it comes from
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Peru, Mexico, Chile and Arizona all produce chrysocolla, generally as a secondary mineral in copper mining districts.
Israel's Timna valley produced the Eilat stone historically, from ancient copper workings sometimes associated with King Solomon's mines, though that association is a romantic label rather than an established fact. The deposit is largely worked out and much material sold as Eilat stone now comes from elsewhere.
Arizona's copper belt produces the finest gem silica, particularly from the Inspiration mine near Miami, and that material commands high prices.
Because chrysocolla is a secondary copper mineral, its distribution tracks copper mining worldwide.
What the traditions claimed
Theophrastus named it around 315 BCE, and the name records a use rather than a meaning: chrysos and kolla, gold and glue, because copper minerals were used as a flux in soldering gold. That practical origin is unusual and worth knowing, since it means the earliest written reference to this stone is metallurgical.
Pliny repeats the name and describes the material.
Egyptian and Near Eastern use of blue-green copper minerals was extensive, but distinguishing chrysocolla from turquoise and malachite in ancient contexts is often impossible without analysis, so specific claims should be treated cautiously.
Modern practice reads chrysocolla as a stone of communication, particularly of expressing difficult feelings, and often calls it a stone of teaching and of women's speech. That reading is twentieth-century.
The teaching association has some appeal given the stone's actual history as a working material in a craft, but the connection is coincidental.
How it is worked with
The expression reading is the usable one and it sits close to amazonite and blue lace agate. Chrysocolla's specific modern brief is about saying things that are difficult rather than things that are merely awkward.
For anything you want to handle, buy chrysocolla in chalcedony rather than pure material. The silicified version is hard at 6 to 7, safe in water, and will survive a pocket; pure chrysocolla will not survive being looked at hard.
Gem silica is expensive and worth seeing once, since it is one of the most intensely coloured translucent stones there is.
For pure or mixed soft material, treat it as a specimen: keep it dry, do not soak it, and handle it as little as possible.
The copper cautions apply to all of it.
Buying it honestly
The main issue is what you are actually buying.
Most sold chrysocolla is chrysocolla in chalcedony, which is the good outcome. Pure chrysocolla is soft and friable and is often stabilised with resin.
Dyed howlite, dyed magnesite and dyed quartzite are sold in this colour range, and hardness distinguishes them.
Reconstituted material, powder in a binder, is common.
Eilat stone is genuine but the name is applied loosely to any chrysocolla and malachite mixture.
Gem silica is valuable enough to imitate, and dyed chalcedony appears in its place; genuine gem silica has an intense even blue-green with translucency that dyed material rarely matches.
Mixed copper-mineral rocks are sold under many invented trade names.
Handle with care
Copper-bearing: toxic as dust and in water. Never soak it, never make a direct-contact elixir, never grind without extraction. Pure material is soft at 3 and crumbles; silicified material is hard and safe to handle.
