The last covering

The Upanishad describes something made of bliss inside the sheath of discernment and then does not stop there. It is still called a kosha, still a scabbard, still not the sword.

Later Vedanta identifies it with the causal body and with what is present in dreamless sleep, when neither senses nor thought are operating and something nevertheless carries through to the morning.

Why the warning matters

Practitioners reach states that feel conclusive. The five-sheath teaching exists partly to say that a conclusive feeling is not a conclusion, and that bliss is one more thing being experienced rather than the one experiencing.

This is the most quietly radical claim in the scheme, and the reason the koshas are still taught after two and a half thousand years.

The Upanishadic phrasing is precise about why: this sheath contains bliss but does not know its own source. Something that has to be lit from elsewhere is not the light.
