Why is it called etheric?

From the nineteenth-century physics of the luminiferous ether, which Theosophical writers borrowed. The physics was discarded; the term was not.

The etheric body

The layer closest to the skin, usually described as extending an inch or two beyond it and made of fine lines rather than colour. In this model it holds the shape the physical body occupies.

What is described

Accounts of the etheric layer are unusually consistent in one respect: it is described as structured rather than coloured, a web or lattice that the physical body sits inside. Practitioners who work by hand report feeling it as a slight resistance close to the skin.

Of the seven layers this is the one most often reported by people with no training, usually as a faint outline seen against a plain background in dim light.

Practitioners who work with this model hold that distortion appears in this layer before it appears in tissue, which is why hands-on work concentrates here. That is a claim internal to the model. It has not been demonstrated, and treating it as early diagnosis is the single most harmful thing anyone does with this material.

Where the idea comes from

The etheric double is a nineteenth-century Theosophical term, built on the older idea of a vital body and on the physics vocabulary of the day, in which the ether was a real proposal about how light travelled. The physics was abandoned after 1887; the word stayed.

Its nearest counterpart in the older Indian material is pranamaya kosha, though the two were built for different purposes and should not be treated as translations.
