The middle position
Everything about this layer follows from its position. It is fourth of seven, paired with the fourth centre, which is itself the hinge of the chakra series. Both models put connection in the middle, which is either a shared insight or a shared inheritance depending on how sceptically you read the borrowing.
In hands-on practice this layer is where work on relationship is said to happen, and practitioners describe it as the one that responds fastest to another person entering the room.
A word with two jobs
Astral in this model names one layer of seven. Astral in older occult writing names an entire plane, and astral projection refers to travel in it. The two uses overlap and are not identical, which is a common source of confusion when reading across sources.
