Runes: Week of Monday, October 26

A rune from each of the four scripts

Kenaz has two medieval readings that never agree. The Norse poems call it an ulcer, the curse of children; the Old English poem calls it a torch, pale and bright where people rest indoors. Both traditions reach for the word pale, and both describe something that burns by consuming whatever it burns in. Something you are putting heat into this week, a project or a grievance, is likely to show its colour before the week is out. If it is giving light to a room people actually sit in, keep feeding it at a rate you can sustain. If it is only spreading, and nobody is warmer for it, it is closer to the sore than the torch. Treat it while it is still small, and let the remaining days cool.

Íss is ice, and the Norwegian poem gives it two lines: ice we call a broad bridge; the blind man must be led. In a country of fjords, freezing was how heavy loads moved, so the bridge is real. The second line is the warning, because nobody can judge thickness from the surface. This week something that is usually closed may be open to you, a route or an arrangement that was impassable before. Cross with somebody who knows that particular water. The Icelandic stanza calls ice the roof of the wave, a skin over something still moving. Whatever has gone still this week has not stopped underneath. Nothing is being lost while it holds, so there is no need to hurry, only to go across with a guide.

Cen is the torch of the Old English poem, and its first line says the torch is known to every living thing by its fire. The thing itself was a pine splint, a sliver of resinous wood that looks like nothing until it is lit. This week asks you to light yours. Some ability you have been describing or keeping in reserve is likely to be needed in practice, and it only becomes visible once you are using it. A splint burns hot and fast and gives enough light for one room, and then it is spent. Pace the effort across the seven days rather than using it all in the first two, and keep a second splint by the holder. Good work at this rate still has an end.

Coll is the hazel, and its three kennings are all compliments: fairest of trees, sweetest of trees, friend of nutshells. The last is a joke about how much shell you get through to reach a kernel. Hazelnuts were gathered rather than grown. They needed no ploughing, only somebody willing to go out and pick them. This week the reading points at a resource that already exists and has not been collected, such as advice you were given and never used, or a contact you never followed up. Go and gather it. Expect the shells, because opening is slower than eating. The hazel's best-known story ends with a boy who burns his thumb and receives the wisdom meant for somebody else, so pay attention to what you learn by accident.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Something burning, and the choice of whether that is light or infection. Look at it directly today and decide which, because they need opposite treatment.

Taurus

Something is inflamed and has been for a while. Examine it rather than living around it for another season.

Gemini

A torch or an ulcer, and the difference matters today. Name which one it is out loud. Say the one sentence that settles it.

Cancer

Something is sore and you have been managing around it. Look at it properly; managing is not treatment.

Leo

Light for one room, spending itself to give it. Choose the room rather than lighting everything. No audience is required for this one.

Virgo

Something is festering and you already know where. Deal with it while it is still small enough to be dull.

Libra

Something inflamed sits between two people. Name it rather than balancing around it another week. State your own position once, plainly.

Scorpio

You know exactly what is infected here. Kenaz asks you to open it rather than watch it. Say it rather than holding it in reserve.

Sagittarius

Something burns and you will keep moving rather than treating it. It travels with you. Choose the direction before the speed.

Capricorn

Something is inflamed in the structure and you have scheduled it for later. Later has arrived. Decide where it ends before you begin.

Aquarius

A torch or an infection, and telling which is the whole task. Do not treat before you have looked.

Pisces

Something is sore and you will hope it settles. Look at it today; it does not settle on its own.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

Something is inflamed and you have been quietly working around it. Look at it directly; the workaround is now the cost.

Ox

Something festering has been tolerated for a season. Deal with it while it is still merely uncomfortable. Steady beats sudden here.

Tiger

A torch or an infection. Decide which before you act, because you will act fast either way. Once, deliberately, and then stop.

Rabbit

Something is sore and you have been protecting it from examination. Examine it. Silence will be read as consent.

Dragon

Light for one room, at a cost. Choose the room rather than trying to illuminate the whole house.

Snake

You know precisely what is infected here. Open it rather than continuing to observe it. Consider whether it is more useful said.

Horse

Something burns and you will outrun it. It travels at your pace, so stop and treat it. Pick one before the energy picks for you.

Goat

Something is sore and you have absorbed it rather than naming it. Name it today. Ask before you are emptied.

Monkey

You will find a clever way to work around the infection. Kenaz wants it opened. Ask whether it needs solving at all.

Rooster

You have catalogued the problem thoroughly. Now treat it rather than describing it again. Narrower question, not a firmer one.

Dog

Something is festering and you are guarding it from view. Guarding an infection is not protection. Aim it at what actually happened.

Pig

Something is sore and you will hope it resolves quietly. It will not; look at it. Notice who is asking, and how often.
