The gold & yellow ray
The most faked ray in the shop and one of the most interesting historically. Its members include a fossil resin that predates every human culture, a mineral that fooled prospectors for centuries, and a quartz variety so commonly counterfeited that learning to spot it is the fastest lesson available in buying stones honestly.

Themes
Where the association came from
Yellow and gold stone got its meaning by proximity to two things: the sun and metal gold. Neither association needed argument, and both were reinforced by the observable behaviour of the stones themselves.
Amber is the strangest member. It is fossil tree resin, thirty to ninety million years old, warm and light in the hand, and when rubbed it attracts hair and dust. The Greeks called it elektron, and when William Gilbert coined a Latin term for that attractive force in 1600 he built it from the same word, which is how amber gave its name to electricity. It also floats in saltwater, burns with a pine smell, and sometimes contains an insect that died before there were primates.
Pyrite earned the name fool's gold honestly. It grows in cubes so geometrically perfect that people who first encounter them assume they were cut, it strikes sparks against steel, and its brassy shine convinced generations of prospectors. Both of its Greek roots relate to fire.
Citrine is a different case: genuinely rare in nature, and abundant on shelves because heating amethyst turns it yellow-orange.
What the traditions claimed
The Baltic amber trade is one of the oldest documented long-distance routes in Europe, moving amber from the North Sea and Baltic coasts to the Mediterranean and eventually as far as Egypt. Roman writers describe it, and Pliny recorded a Roman expedition that brought back enough to decorate a whole gladiatorial display. Amber beads were placed in graves across Bronze Age Europe.
In classical medicine amber was ground and prescribed for a long list of complaints, and the practice survived into the modern Baltic teething necklace, which is worth being blunt about: there is no evidence that amber releases anything through skin, and paediatric bodies advise against necklaces on infants because of strangulation and choking risk.
Topaz in the medieval lapidaries was said to cool boiling water and to dim in the presence of poison, claims Marbode repeats. The Ouro Preto mines in Brazil later gave the trade imperial topaz, the genuinely golden material, which is scarce.
Chinese and Japanese practice associated golden stone with the earth element and with the centre, and modern crystal practice gave the ray a solar-plexus reading about confidence and self-worth, which is again a twentieth-century framing.
The stones of this ray
- Citrine (Quartz, Mohs 7). Genuinely rare, and almost everything sold under the name is heated amethyst. Learning to tell them apart is the fastest lesson in buying honestly.
- Tiger's eye (Quartz, Mohs 7). Quartz that replaced a fibrous blue mineral and kept its silky bands. Roman soldiers carried it engraved; the chatoyant flash gave it the eye of every culture's watchful animal.
- Topaz (The gem silicates, Mohs 8). Golden imperial topaz from Ouro Preto is the real thing; almost every blue topaz on sale was colourless until it was irradiated. November's birthstone with citrine.
- Calcite (The carbonates, Mohs 3). The most polymorphic common mineral, and the source of Iceland spar, whose double refraction is the strongest candidate for the Viking sunstone.
- Pyrite (The metallic ores, Mohs 6). Fool's gold, in natural cubes so perfect they look cut. Struck for fire since the Neolithic, and unstable in humid air, where it can crumble and give off acid.
- Amber (Carbons, glasses & organics, Mohs 2.5). Fossil resin, thirty to ninety million years old, that holds a static charge when rubbed. The Greek word for it, elektron, is where electricity got its name.
Working with the ray
The ray is about worth in both senses, what you are willing to charge and what you believe you deserve, and traditions used it in contexts of harvest, payment and standing.
For practice, amber is the most interesting object in the ray, because holding an insect that died in the Eocene reorients a person's sense of time faster than any argument does. It is soft at 2.5, so it belongs in a pouch rather than a pocket with keys.
Citrine acquired a modern reputation as a money stone, complete with a habit of putting a piece in a till or a wallet. It is a harmless practice and a good example of how quickly a meaning attaches: the association is decades old, not centuries. Tiger's eye is the older confidence stone, worn engraved by Roman soldiers, and it is tough enough for daily carry.
Colour you can trust
This is the ray where knowing one fact saves you real money. Almost all bright citrine, especially the large clusters and points sold cheaply, is heat-treated amethyst. Heated material shows a distinctive orange-brown cast, often with white or bleached bases where the amethyst zoning was, and its colour concentrates at the crystal tips. Natural citrine is a paler, more even lemon to smoky yellow. Neither is fake, exactly, but one should cost far less than the other.
Amber is imitated by copal, which is young resin, and by plastic. Real amber floats in a strong saltwater solution while most plastics sink, takes a static charge when rubbed on wool, and smells of pine rather than of chemicals when touched with a hot pin, which is a destructive test to use only on an inconspicuous spot.
Pyrite has a genuine defect rather than a fake: pyrite decay, where humidity converts it to sulfates, cracking the specimen and producing sulfuric acid that will damage anything it touches. Keep pyrite dry and away from paper and other minerals.
Blue topaz, though the wrong colour for this ray, is worth naming here: nearly all of it was colourless topaz that has been irradiated and heated.
