Ogham

Ceirt is a rag: dregs of clothing, the whole worth of a person with no standing, shelter for somebody living outside the settlement. The kennings are unsentimental and none of them is about the apple the glossators attached later. A rag is cloth that has finished being a garment and is still cloth, still useful, and visibly come down in the world. These seven days are for making do. Something of yours is past its best and will do the job anyway, and the task is to use it without apologising for it and without pretending it is new. The third kenning offers shelter rather than a house, and cover at the margin still counts as cover.
