Where it runs
Vishvodhara spreads through the navel region rather than running to a termination. Its job in the scheme is distribution: what the fire at the navel processes has to reach everywhere, and this is the channel that carries it.
In the vayu vocabulary the same function belongs to samana, the gathering wind. The two systems describe one process twice, which happens repeatedly in this literature.
A second family of tables sends vishvodhara outward through the limbs to the hands and great toes rather than keeping it at the navel, usually swapping it with yashasvini. The navel reading is the one that fits its name.
The name
Vishva is everything or the whole world; udara is the belly. Taken together the name says that the belly holds the whole, which is both a claim about digestion and a piece of standard Indian cosmological wordplay.
