Four of Wands

Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
Four of Wands

Four wands stand in the ground with a garland strung between them, and beyond the arch two figures are dancing with bouquets raised while a castle sits in the distance. The Four of Wands is the card of the threshold: something is finished enough to be celebrated and stable enough to be built on. Today has a homecoming in it, a marker passed, or ground that is finally yours. Acknowledge it out loud. The garland goes up before the castle is done. You are not waiting for the end to celebrate. You are celebrating the foundation, which is the part that has to be right.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will be through the arch before you see it. Stop under the garland today. The Four of Wands is a marker passed, and you have to look at it to have passed it.

Taurus

This is your card: the ground that is finally yours and the party on it. Today make the party. The foundation is laid and the celebration is part of the building.

Gemini

You will invite everyone and forget what the garland is for. Today say what is being marked. The four wands stand for something specific, and the dancers know what.

Cancer

Homecoming is the whole of this card and the whole of you. Today let it be a homecoming for others too. Put up the garland where people can walk under it.

Leo

The dancers with bouquets are your natural place and the castle is unfinished. Dance anyway. The card celebrates the foundation, and the foundation is the part you built.

Virgo

You will not celebrate until the castle is done. The garland goes up before the castle. Today mark the foundation as finished, because it is, and the rest can wait.

Libra

Two figures dancing is the image and you are one of them. Today find the other. The Four of Wands is a shared threshold, and crossing it alone misses the card.

Scorpio

You will note the marker privately and move on. Today mark it out loud. The garland is public for a reason: what is celebrated openly holds better than what is noted.

Sagittarius

You will reach the arch and immediately look for the next one. Stay under this one today. A threshold crossed at a run is not a homecoming.

Capricorn

The foundation is right and you will treat it as day one of the next phase. Today treat it as the end of this one. Put up the garland before you draw the castle.

Aquarius

You will find the ceremony unnecessary. It is the card. Today the four wands and the garland are the structure, and the structure is what lets the castle come later.

Pisces

You will feel the homecoming and not be sure whose home it is. Yours. Today the ground under the garland belongs to you, and the card says so plainly.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will pass the marker and immediately calculate the next one. Today stop at this one. The Four of Wands is a foundation acknowledged, and the acknowledgment is the work.

Ox

The foundation is yours; you laid it. Today put up the garland yourself. You will want someone else to call it finished, and the card says you may.

Tiger

You will vault the four wands and knock the garland down. Walk under it. Today the threshold is crossed slowly, and the dancers are not racing.

Rabbit

A celebration with everyone watching is your nightmare and today it is the card. Small garland, two dancers, one castle. Let it be seen and let it be small.

Dragon

The castle is not a castle yet and you will be disappointed by the garland. Today the garland is the point. The foundation is what gets celebrated, and it is what you built.

Snake

You will mark the threshold alone and privately. Today one other person. The Four of Wands has two dancers, and the second one is the card.

Horse

You will run through the arch to the castle and find it unfinished. Stop at the arch. Today the celebration is here, at the marker, not at the end.

Goat

You will wait to be told it is time to celebrate. It is time. Today put the garland up yourself and invite the one person who will dance.

Monkey

You will make the celebration clever. Make it plain. Today four wands, a garland, two people, and the ground is yours: that is the whole design.

Rooster

You will inspect the four wands for straightness. They stand. Today the threshold is crossed as it is, and the castle's precision is another month's work.

Dog

You built the foundation for other people and will celebrate their homecoming. Today it is also yours. Walk under the garland as one of the dancers.

Pig

This is your card and you will make it a feast. Good. The one instruction is to know what the garland marks, so the feast is about something.
