Queen of Subways

The Tarot of New York City
Queen of Subways

The Queen of Subways sits on the platform bench, having ridden every line and survived every delay, kind and unfoolable, with every soft illusion already cut away. She is the Queen of Swords in the city's language: clarity, straight talk, experience turned into sight. Today calls for exactly her. See the situation as it is rather than as the ad on the platform wall says it is. Say the true thing without decoration and without cruelty, which is the harder combination. The Queen is not cold. She has simply seen the hustle before, and she will tell you so while she holds your bag.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You have the Queen's directness without her patience. Today add the patience. The true thing said kindly lands; said fast, it bounces off.

Taurus

You see the hustle and say nothing, which is not the Queen. Today say it. Kind and unfoolable is a voice, and the voice is the half you have been keeping.

Gemini

You have seen every hustle and find them interesting. Today the Queen finds them tiresome and says so. Clarity is a verdict, not a commentary.

Cancer

You will soften the truth until it is not true. Today the Queen's kindness is in the plainness. Say what you see, once, and let it be the kindness.

Leo

You want to be the Queen and be liked for it. Today the unfoolable part costs you a little liking. Pay it. The bench is not a throne, and the truth is the seat.

Virgo

This is close to your card and the Queen adds warmth to the precision. Today be exact and kind in the same sentence. The second half is the work.

Libra

You see clearly and refuse to choose a side. Today the Queen chooses: this is the hustle, that is the truth. Say which is which.

Scorpio

You see through everything and keep it to yourself. Today tell one person what you saw. The Queen holds the bag and says the thing; the seeing alone is only half.

Sagittarius

You tell the truth loudly and leave. Today stay on the bench after you have said it. The Queen is unfoolable and still there when the train comes.

Capricorn

You have the experience and use it as authority. Today use it as sight. The Queen does not pull rank; she names what she has seen before.

Aquarius

You see the pattern and miss the person. Today the Queen sees both. Say the true thing to the actual person on the platform, not to the pattern.

Pisces

You feel the hustle and cannot name it. Today name it. The Queen's sight is specific, and the specific word is what cuts the illusion away.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You see every hustle because you have run most of them. Today the Queen sees them from the bench and says so. Be the one who names it rather than the one who ran it.

Ox

You have ridden every line and say nothing about it. Today say one thing you have seen. The Queen's experience is turned into sight for other people.

Tiger

You will cut the illusion away with a swing. Today the Queen cuts with a sentence. Kind and unfoolable is quieter than you and lands harder.

Rabbit

You see clearly and would rather not say. Today say. The Queen holds the bag and tells the truth in the same gesture; the truth is a kindness in her mouth.

Dragon

You want to be seen as the one who knows. Today be the one who saw. The Queen does not announce her experience; she uses it on the bench.

Snake

You are unfoolable and unkind about it, in private. Today the Queen's addition is warmth. See through the hustle and still hold the bag for whoever fell for it.

Horse

You will board the train before the Queen has finished speaking. Stay for the sentence. What she says on the platform is the thing you need on the ride.

Goat

You see the hustle and blame yourself for falling for it. Today the Queen sees it and blames nobody. Name it plainly and let the shame be someone else's.

Monkey

You see the hustle and admire it. Today the Queen sees it and says it is a hustle. Admiration is a way of not being clear.

Rooster

You see every flaw and say every one. Today the Queen says the true thing, singular. Clarity is one sentence, not a list.

Dog

You see the hustle and protect people from it silently. Today tell them. The Queen's protection is the plain word, said while holding the bag.

Pig

You see clearly and would rather be comfortable than say. Today say, kindly. The Queen is not unkind; she is unfoolable, and the two can share a bench.
