Ogham
Ifín began as Pín, a letter built from Latin pinus so that Irish could write the P in Patricius at all. Then scribes decided the fifth group should be a tidy series of vowels, stripped the /p/ out of it and renamed it. A working solution was retired for symmetry, and the original need came straight back. Today something of yours is being reassigned for reasons that have nothing to do with whether it was working, and you are allowed to say so out loud. The gooseberry later attached to the name arrived through a pun, so do not go looking there for the sense.
