A rune from each of the four scripts

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Thurisaz is the giant and the thorn, and the Anglo-Saxon poem is exact about the second: sharp to every thane, evil to grasp, cruel to anyone who rests among them. The rune is a force that works and injures whoever handles it carelessly. Something today has that shape: a defence, a boundary, a piece of necessary sharpness. Use it and do not lean on it. The thorn does its job by being where it is, not by being held in the hand.

Kaun is a sore: something festering that will be discovered too late. The rune is unpleasant and useful. There is a small problem today that you have decided is not worth raising, and the reason it is not worth raising is that it is still small. That is precisely the window. Say it now, while it is still an inconvenience rather than a wound.

Cealc is Calc with its branch structure doubled, and that is nearly the whole description. It sits in manuscript rune-rows and effectively nowhere else: no stanza, no etymology of its own, no use in any running text. Page called letters like this antiquarian pseudo-runes, and Cealc is among the cases where the charge sticks. Today, go looking for the duplicate. Somewhere you are maintaining two of something that was only ever one, and the cost is not the room it takes up but the attention of keeping both in step.

Ifín began as Pín, a letter built from Latin pinus so that Irish could write the P in Patricius at all. Then scribes decided the fifth group should be a tidy series of vowels, stripped the /p/ out of it and renamed it. A working solution was retired for symmetry, and the original need came straight back. Today something of yours is being reassigned for reasons that have nothing to do with whether it was working, and you are allowed to say so out loud. The gooseberry later attached to the name arrived through a pun, so do not go looking there for the sense.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You are the thorn and the giant, so today is familiar ground. The rune's warning is for you specifically: the sharpness works when it stays in the hedge, and injures you first when you pick it up to use it.

Taurus

You will hold a boundary today and hold it well. The rune adds nothing to that except a reminder that a hedge does not chase anyone. Stand where you are and let people find the thorn themselves.

Gemini

You will argue for the boundary instead of keeping it. Thurisaz does not explain itself. Say the one sentence that marks where the hedge is and then say nothing else about it.

Cancer

Your defences are soft-edged and this rune's are not. Today, let one boundary be sharp and unapologetic. The people who matter will step round it; the ones who grasp it were going to anyway.

Leo

You will make the thorn a performance. It is not. The hedge works quietly and without an audience. Today keep the boundary and skip the announcement of it.

Virgo

You will trim the hedge until it is no longer sharp. Leave it. Thurisaz is deliberately cruel to grasp, and a boundary that has been made comfortable for everybody is not one.

Libra

Today asks for a sharpness you would rather negotiate. There is nothing to negotiate. State the boundary once and let the giant find out for itself that it holds.

Scorpio

You know exactly how sharp you can be and you save it. Today spend a little of it. The thorn used deliberately, once, is what stops you needing the giant later.

Sagittarius

You will walk straight into the hedge because you were looking at the horizon. Watch your feet today. The thorn injures whoever handles it carelessly, and carelessness is a form of speed.

Capricorn

You keep boundaries as policy and enforce them as process. Thurisaz is simpler: a thorn, sharp on contact. Today let one boundary be immediate rather than procedural.

Aquarius

You will explain the principle behind the boundary. The giant does not care about the principle. Keep the boundary itself today and let the explanation stay in the drawer.

Pisces

You have no thorns and today the rune lends you one. Use it. A single sharp edge, kept where it belongs, is what keeps the rest of you from being walked through.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You get round hedges rather than through them and today one is in your way for a reason. Do not go round. Find out what it protects and whether you actually need to be on the other side.

Ox

You will stand in front of the giant and take the pressure. Stand behind the hedge instead. Today the thorn is doing the work and you do not have to be the wall as well.

Tiger

You will grasp the thorn to prove it does not hurt. It hurts. Today the force is real and the rune is honest about who it injures first. Let it be sharp without testing it.

Rabbit

You have been keeping a soft boundary and people have been walking through it. Thurisaz gives you a hard one for the day. Use it once and notice that nobody dies.

Dragon

You will meet the giant head-on because that is what you do. Not today. The hedge holds without you standing in front of it, and the rune rewards the one who let the thorn work.

Snake

You keep your sharpness hidden until it is needed and today it is needed. Show one edge, briefly, deliberately. The giant at the wall responds to nothing else.

Horse

You will run into the thorn at speed. Slow down at exactly the point where the hedge starts. The rune is not an obstacle to be jumped; it is a line to be respected.

Goat

You have no hedge and you have been paying for it. Today plant one. A single boundary, kept without apology, stops more than a month of accommodating.

Monkey

You will find the gap in the hedge and go through it for fun. Do not. Today the thorn is exactly where it should be, and the clever route round it lands you with the giant.

Rooster

You keep boundaries precisely and announce them precisely. Today skip the announcement. Thurisaz is sharp on contact and does not send a notice first.

Dog

You guard the gate and will fight the giant at it. Let the hedge do the fighting. Today your job is to keep the gate shut, not to go out and meet what is pushing on it.

Pig

You would rather there were no thorn and today there is one. Leave it in place. The comfort you want depends on the boundary you are inclined to remove.
