A rune from each of the four scripts

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Ehwaz is horse and rider: two parties moving as one because each trusts the other to hold up their end. Today depends on a partnership rather than on you. Check the trust is mutual and current, not inherited from an older arrangement. Where it holds you will cover ground easily. Where it has quietly lapsed, nothing moves.

Þurs is the giant of the Norse poems: the torment of women, the dweller among rocks, a hostile power outside the settlement that does not negotiate. The Younger Futhark kept the monster and dropped the thorn. Today something is pushing from outside your arrangements, and it is not going to be reasoned with. Do not go out to meet it. Keep the gate, keep the routine, and let it wear itself out on the wall rather than on you.

Æsc is the ash, and the Old English stanza is entirely about position: exceedingly tall, firm on its base, holding its place rightly though many men attack it. The same word means a spear, which is where the attackers come from. Today your job is most likely not to move. Something you have already decided is being contested from more than one direction, and the height that makes you conspicuous is part of why it is being contested. The poem promises nothing about winning. It says the ash holds its place, which is a claim about conduct and not about the outcome.

Ébad is the letter that cut the word KOI into stone: here lies. It is the flat, functional part of a memorial, the clause that fixes a fact to a place, and it is the one supplementary letter anybody thought worth the trouble of carving. Today something of yours is already finished and what is missing is the marking. Put a date on it, say it where it can be heard, tell the person who still believes the matter is open. Scribes later read this letter as a salmon, and that is the prettier layer, but it earned its place by stating a thing plainly.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Horse and rider moving as one because each trusts the other. Today depends on a partnership rather than on your own speed.

Taurus

Two moving as one, and the trust has to be current rather than inherited. Check it today rather than assuming.

Gemini

The partnership carries you further than either of you alone. Attend to the other party rather than the distance.

Cancer

Trust between two, which is your whole subject. Where it holds, today covers ground easily. Tend it rather than worrying at it.

Leo

Horse and rider, and the poem notes the horse is praised among riders. The partnership is the point rather than either party.

Virgo

Two parties moving as one requires the arrangement to be checked occasionally. Check it, kindly, today. Check it improves the work, not the record.

Libra

A partnership in motion, which is your natural instrument. Make sure the trust runs both directions today. State your own position once, plainly.

Scorpio

Trust is the mechanism here and you extend it slowly. Extend it once today and see what it carries.

Sagittarius

Partnership rather than solo speed, which will chafe. Today you cover ground only with somebody. Choose the direction before the speed.

Capricorn

The arrangement works because both parties hold up their end. Confirm yours is still what they think it is.

Aquarius

A partnership that works without being managed. Leave it alone rather than optimising it today. Deal with the person, not the principle.

Pisces

Two moving as one, which you feel easily. Say the trust out loud today; it holds better named.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

Today depends on somebody else holding up their end. Check the arrangement is still what you both think it is.

Ox

Two moving as one, at a pace you can both keep. Your steadiness is what makes it work.

Tiger

You will want to move at your own speed. The partnership is what covers ground today. Once, deliberately, and then stop.

Rabbit

Trust between two and you extend it carefully. Extend it once today and let it carry you. Silence will be read as consent.

Dragon

Horse and rider, and neither is the point alone. Share the credit for the distance covered. Set the direction and delegate the rest.

Snake

You will test the trust rather than use it. Use it; the testing costs you the day. Consider whether it is more useful said.

Horse

A partnership that lets you go further and not faster. Accept the trade. Pick one before the energy picks for you.

Goat

Trust is easy for you to give and hard to ask for. Ask today. Ask before you are emptied.

Monkey

You will improvise around the partnership rather than through it. Work with them. Ask whether it needs solving at all.

Rooster

The arrangement holds because both parties keep it. Confirm the terms once and then stop checking. Narrower question, not a firmer one.

Dog

Loyalty is the mechanism here and it is mutual. Let them carry their half without supervision. Aim it at what actually happened.

Pig

You will trust immediately and completely. Confirm the terms once; it makes the trust sturdier. Notice who is asking, and how often.
