تصویرسازی و نمادگرایی
In the Tarot of Beijing the Three of Coins shows the restoration of an old temple gate. Three craftsmen stand on a timber scaffold at the height of the lintel. The mason in white points at the brickwork, the carpenter leans in with his tool raised, and the painter in teal steadies a hanging scroll of measurements beside a pot of vermilion. Below them an abbot squats on the ground with the architectural drawing spread between his hands, and as the deck's plot insists, he holds it upside down.
The three coins of the card's rank are not scattered on the ground or floating in the sky. They are carved into the gate itself, set in a row above the lintel where the Rider-Waite-Smith card places its three pentacles in the stone of a church arch. This is the card's central statement: in this deck, wealth that lasts is wealth built into architecture. The coins are square-holed copper cash, heaven round and earth square, and their place above the door says that honest work sanctifies the threshold it repairs.
The scaffold is lashed timber, knotted with rope that coils down to the ground. It is temporary by nature and trustworthy by craft, since the crew's lives depend on knots tied properly, the quietest possible image of mutual reliance. The three workers occupy three heights and three postures, so no two do the same job and none could finish the gate alone. That the abbot holds the drawing upside down is not mockery. It is the deck's gentle note about rank and knowledge: the man who commissioned the work understands it least, and the work proceeds anyway, because the real plan lives in the conversation between the trades.
The half-restored wall shows the card's moment precisely. On the left, finished grey brick; on the right, a raw patch of orange-red where the old surface waits. The work is neither begun nor done, but exactly one-third of the way, the number of the card. In the corner by the scaffold leg sits a small iron kettle on a brick stove, tools laid down beside it, because tea is how a Beijing crew becomes a crew. The scene is painted in the deck's Feng Zikai voice: calm brush lines, grey ink washes, vermilion in the paint pot and teal in the painter's jacket, on gold-flecked kraft paper with the red seal in the corner.
معنی اصلی
The Three of Coins is Beijing's Three of Pentacles, and the deck restates the archetype as a job site. It marks the period when work stops being solitary and becomes collective: a project begun in earnest, a training undertaken, a craft practiced under the eyes of people who know it better. Where the number two was a meeting, the three is the thing actually made, the stage where a plan stops being a drawing in an abbot's hands and becomes brick under a mason's fingers.
The card's core lesson is that skilled work is collaborative and that collaboration runs on talk. The gate here is being restored, not built from nothing, so the work asks for respect for what came before, precision about what stays and what goes, and constant conversation between people holding different tools. Three is the smallest number that can hold a conversation: two workers can disagree, but three must talk, and the gate depends on the talking. In this deck the moral is stated plainly at the top of the drawing. The gate does not care about rank. It only cares that the three of them talk.
معنی حالت مستقیم
Upright, the Three of Coins is one of the most encouraging cards in the deck. It signals a fertile period of coordinated work: apprenticeship, teamwork that actually works, the practical implementation of a long plan, and the first visible results setting above the lintel. The first bricks are already reset and the first coat of paint is mixed, so what you are building can be seen from the street. Skill matters here, and so does the willingness to ask, to show your drawing to others, and to listen to the trade you understand least.
در عشق. Love, too, is a restoration project, and this one is going well. The card describes a relationship in its building phase: two people past the sketch and laying actual brick, with shared plans, shared budgets, a home taking shape, perhaps marriage or family on the drawing. One partner points, the other measures, and neither pretends to do both jobs. For newer couples it signals serious intent rather than idle strolling by Shichahai; for established ones, the maturity to repair rather than replace.
در شغل. The card of the trade and the crew. It marks effective teamwork, the recognition of expertise, and the successful completion of a first stage: probation passed, the pilot delivered, the apprentice trusted with real brick. It is strongly tied to learning on the job, the kind of knowledge that only passes from scaffold to scaffold. Bounce ideas off colleagues, use the resources around you, and let competence be noticed by the people whose notice matters.
در امور مالی. The sound of honest work turning into income. It favors money made with partners and a crew, income tied directly to competence, a venture finding its footing, and sensible spending on tools and training. The coins here are carved into the gate, a reminder that the most durable money is built into something: a skill, a workshop, a reputation in the lane. Spend on the scaffold, not on the show.
در سلامتی. The body treated as the gate under restoration, and the news is good. The card favors methodical effort, a sensible regimen, and working with others: a trainer, a physician, a class, someone to point at the problem while another measures progress. Consistency matters more than intensity, since old habits, like old brick, are reworked gently or they crumble. What is built slowly and properly will hold.
معنی حالت معکوس
Reversed, the Three of Coins shows the same scaffold gone quiet. The mason points and no one looks, the drawing stays upside down, the vermilion dries in the pot. It points to poor coordination, an unwillingness to learn, or plans stalling because nobody agreed on the order of the work. Projects drag, skills fail to bear fruit, and the restoration threatens to become a demolition through sheer carelessness. It can also mark work done for show: fresh paint over crumbling brick.
در عشق. The couple's scaffold has gone silent. Each partner works their own section of the wall and resents the other's methods, the small daily repairs go undone, and the cracks join up. Feelings cooled into neglect show as unfinished plans and postponed decisions, with effort so unequal that one person feels like the only worker on site. Relationships on this card fail from lack of coordination, not lack of love, and coordination can be scheduled.
در شغل. A crew in name only. Roles blur, misunderstandings multiply, and a deadline is threatened because the mason and the carpenter no longer speak. It can point to real skill going unacknowledged while credit pools elsewhere, or to a loss of standing after work that should have been done better. For students it can mean overload and poor instruction. Clarify the roles, put the plan right side up where everyone can see it, and rebuild the habit of asking and answering.
در امور مالی. Income leaking through bad coordination. The trouble rarely comes from bad luck; it comes from unproductive work, an unwilling partnership, or a plan nobody agreed on while the wages are already being paid. Watch for money spent on appearances while the brickwork crumbles, and for the refusal to learn from people who know better. Talent left unorganized is the most expensive thing on this card.
در سلامتی. The restoration has lost its plan. There may be effort without method, punishing workouts and regimens copied from someone else's drawing, or method without rest, the crew working through the night until someone falls off the scaffold. Fatigue and burnout are the main hazards. Pause, reassess with someone qualified, and rebuild the balance of work, food, and rest before resuming. Consulting a professional is not defeat; it is turning the drawing right side up.
یادداشتهای تاریخی
Before the Rider-Waite-Smith scene, the card was pure geometry. In the Tarot de Marseille and its precursors, like the Pierre Madenie deck of 1709, the Three of Coins is three floral coins arranged in a column or triangle and bound by organic vine work, with no human drama at all. Its theme was realization, the transition to a new stage, and the growth that sprouts from hard structure. Later readers of the Marseille tradition, notably Alejandro Jodorowsky and Marianne Costa, framed it as a mandate to sacrifice attachments that once nourished us but now chain us down.
The scenic version arrived in 1909 with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. A.E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith, both of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, replaced the abstract pips with a tableau inside a stone church: a young stonemason on a wooden bench holding a chisel, consulting with a tonsured monk and an architect who holds the building plans. The three figures stand for the spiritual, mental, and physical faculties that any great work must bring into alignment, and the three pentacles carved into the arch above them mirror the Supernal Triangle at the top of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.
The Tarot of Beijing keeps that RWS architecture and moves it east. The church arch becomes a temple gate, the mason, monk, and architect become a mason, carpenter, painter, and abbot, and the three pentacles in the stone become three square-holed coins carved above the lintel. The scaffold, the shared plan, and the collaboration survive. The cathedral of real masters becomes a gate in a lane, and four people arguing kindly about how to fix it.
تطبیقها و ارتباطات
عدد. Three, the number of first creation and the fruitful result of a joining. One is the intention, two is the meeting, and three is the thing actually made. In this deck the arithmetic is painted onto the card: three craftsmen, three trades of stone, wood, and paint, three coins carved in a row, and a wall exactly one-third restored. Three is also a first checkpoint rather than a finish line, the moment work has advanced far enough to be judged, which is why the abbot squats below with the plan.
اخترشناسی. The second, middle decan of Capricorn, from roughly December 31 to January 9, ruled by Mars. Capricorn is cardinal earth governed by Saturn, the taskmaster of time and structure, and Mars is exalted here, its volatile drive channeled by Capricorn's discipline instead of burning out. That pairing of energy and structure is why the card stands for perseverance and the rare ability to carry a hard project to completion. In the deck it appears as the crew racing the autumn rains, Mars supplying the heat in the vermilion pot.
عنصر. Earth, the suit's element and the deck's world of Coins: square-holed copper cash, work, body, and household. Joined to the number three, the suit shifts from possession to production. This is not money held but money being made the slow way, through skill applied in company.
کابالا. Binah in Assiah, the Sephira of Understanding operating in the dense physical world. Binah is the mother of form, which takes raw energy and gives it structure and boundaries, exactly the function of a crew turning a drawing into a gate.
Elemental dignity. As an earthy Three it grounds and stabilizes the cards around it. It anchors airy Swords into practical healing and steadies fiery ambition into finished work, though beside the Four of Coins it can tip from productive collaboration toward guarded hoarding.
دیدگاه روانشناختی
The person of this card takes real pleasure in a task done properly and measures themselves against the craft rather than against the people beside them. They are practical, steady, and constantly learning: the young ones watch the old ones' hands, and the old ones still ask questions of the drawing. Often full of ideas, they would rather prove an idea in brick or wood before arguing it in words, and they respect other trades enough not to tell the painter how to mix vermilion. They carry a quiet conviction that good work is its own form of good character.
At their best they show competence without ego and a readiness to teach what they know. The shadow runs two ways. It can be the person who stands on the scaffold but never joins the crew, refusing to explain their methods or learn anyone else's and treating every question as an insult. It can also be genuine skill soured by arrogance, a master's hands attached to a temperament no crew can bear. Either way the gate they touch stays scaffolded far longer than it should, because the work here was never meant to be done alone.
سه در عرشههای گوناگون
رایدر-ویت-اسمیت. The 1909 card sets a stonemason, a monk, and an architect in consultation inside a stone church, with three pentacles carved into the arch above them. The Three of Coins keeps that scene of trades meeting over a shared plan and moves it to a Beijing temple gate under restoration.
تاروت مارسی. The classic Three of Coins is abstract, three floral coins in a column or triangle bound by vine work, its meaning carried by number and growth rather than by a scene. Beijing restores the human drama the Marseille pip leaves out, while keeping the same sense of a stage reached on a longer climb.
کرولی-توت. Crowley renamed the suit Disks and titled this card Works, or the Lord of Material Works, stripping the human narrative for a pyramid built on earth with three disks above it bearing the hourglass of Saturn and the mason's plumb, square, and level. The Beijing card shares that reverence for precise, structural labor, but shows it through hands and tea rather than through alchemical geometry.
بازآفرینیهای مدرن. James Wanless's Voyager Tarot renames the suit Worlds and titles the Three Nurturing, recasting the mason's collaboration as an organic act of sustaining what we build. The Tarot of Beijing sits comfortably in that humane lineage, its restored gate a piece of shared work meant to outlast the workers.
در ترکیب و زمینه کارتها
The Three of Coins reads as a stabilizing anchor, and its meaning shifts with the company it keeps. Beside the Three of Swords it turns heartbreak into a structured recovery, the sign of someone doing the work: therapy, a support network, practical steps to rebuild after a loss. Add The Magician to that spread and the person clearly has the power to shape a new life from the ruins of the old.
With romantic cards the card sheds its ambiguity. Beside The Lovers or the Two of Cups it marks a healthy union where devotion is matched by a mature willingness to co-manage daily life, a couple who can both romance each other and build something together. Beside The Devil the collaboration curdles into a trap: a relationship of convenience, exploited labor, or the golden cage of a lucrative job that chains the soul. Beside the High Priestess or The Moon the third figure on the scaffold reads as a hidden one, secrets in the workplace or a collaboration kept behind closed doors.
Watch the neighbor at the Four of Coins especially, since the middle decan of Capricorn sits just before the hoarding of the third decan. When the Three of Coins keeps appearing, treat it as an instruction rather than a portrait: name the goal out loud, divide the work by real skill, and keep the kettle warm for whoever is on the next plank.
