Runes: Week of Monday, October 19

A rune from each of the four scripts

Sowilo is the sun, and the poems treat it as an instrument rather than a blessing. The Old English stanza gives it to sailors crossing open water with no coastline in sight; the Icelandic calls it the lifelong sorrow of ice. This week carries both senses. Something that was frozen in place starts to move, and at the same time a reference point becomes clear enough to steer by. The second matters more. If you have been weighing a decision against several shifting considerations, find the one that does not shift and set your heading by it. Let the rest be weather. Sowilo does not say the week ends in success. It says you can see well enough to hold a course, and holding it for seven days is the work.

Fé is wealth, and both Norse poems open on the same phrase: discord among kinsmen. Estates in the Viking Age were divided among heirs, and the sagas are full of what followed. The Norwegian stanza adds that the wolf is reared in the forest: trouble growing out of sight. This week money or a shared resource comes into focus, and the rune is less interested in how much there is than in who else believes they have a claim on it. Name those claims early. Put the arrangement in writing, even between people who trust each other, because trust is what makes a later argument so bitter. If something comes in, decide how it will be divided before anyone asks. The rune's warning is narrow: the quarrel tends to arrive through the money rather than because of it.

Sigel is the sun, and the Old English poem gives it to one group only: seamen, for whom it is always a hope while they cross the fish's bath, until the sea-steed brings them to land. That last clause sets the terms of the week. You are in the middle of a crossing, with the old coast behind you and the new one not yet visible, and what you have is a single reliable reference. Use it. Check your heading against it once a day rather than every hour, because constant correction is how a ship ends up zigzagging. Whatever later books say, this is not a victory rune; sigel means the sun and has nothing to do with triumph. It offers a bearing, not an arrival. Keep the course steady and let landfall come when it comes.

Idad is almost certainly the yew, and its kennings are about age: oldest of trees, fairest of the ancients. The second phrase uses a word that means old people as readily as old things, so the letter reaches toward ancestry. This week something long-standing sits beside whatever feels pressing: a family pattern, an old arrangement, an institution, a person who was here before the current problem and will be here after it. Let the comparison set the scale. Much of what seems urgent will look small next to it, and that is useful rather than deflating. Idad is also the last of the twenty letters, the fifth notch, the point where a sequence is complete. If something is finishing, treat it as finished rather than failed, and ask someone older what they remember of how it began.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You steer by whatever is in front of you, which works until the front changes. Name your fixed point before you set off and the speed becomes useful rather than expensive.

Taurus

Your fixed point is usually a physical one and here that is an advantage. Anchor the decision to something you can see, touch or count, and the rest of the fog stops mattering.

Gemini

Three references and a good argument for each is your resting state. Sowilo asks for one. Choose the reference you would keep if you had to explain yourself to somebody with no time.

Cancer

You navigate by how people feel, which moves with the weather. Find something today that does not: a commitment, a fact, a date. Steer by that and let the moods pass overhead.

Leo

Your fixed point is often what other people will make of it. Swap that out for something interior today. The sun in this rune shines whether or not anybody looks up.

Virgo

You have the instruments and no chosen heading, which is why the checking never ends. Pick the destination first. Analysis without a reference is how an entire day disappears into detail.

Libra

Balance is not a heading. Sowilo is the one thing you point at, and pointing at two is the same as pointing at none. Choose the reference and let the balance follow from it.

Scorpio

You know your fixed point and have told nobody what it is. That works, but confirm it once today, alone and in words. Unspoken headings drift further than you would expect.

Sagittarius

You have the direction and no reference, which is how enthusiasm ends up somewhere arbitrary. Fix on one specific thing this morning. Distance covered only counts once it is aimed.

Capricorn

Your fixed point is a long way off and today is one of the days it looks theoretical. Look at it anyway. This rune is for exactly the stretch where no landmark is visible.

Aquarius

You steer by principle, which is a genuine fixed point and an abstract one. Convert it into something with a date this morning. The rune is about navigation rather than about being right.

Pisces

Everything is a reference to you, which comes to the same thing as nothing being one. Pick one hard fact and return to it whenever the current moves. That is all the structure needed.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You navigate by reading the situation and the situation is unusually unclear. Take the fixed point instead of the read. Your instinct is excellent and it needs something to be excellent against.

Ox

You hold a heading better than anybody once it is set, and you rarely ask whether it is still the right one. Check the star today, then carry on exactly as you were.

Tiger

You move first and orient afterwards, which mostly works. Today it will not. Thirty seconds fixing the reference before you go saves the whole afternoon of correcting course.

Rabbit

You avoid open water. Sowilo is for people already out on it, and you are further out than you have admitted. Find your one reference and the crossing becomes ordinary.

Dragon

You expect the destination to be obvious from the air. Today it is not, and the rune offers something smaller and more useful: one point held steadily in bad visibility.

Snake

Your instinct is a good instrument and it works best with a fixed reference to measure against. Name yours today rather than sensing it. Precision costs you nothing here.

Horse

You have covered a great deal of ground by never asking where. Ask this morning. The sun in this rune is not a limit on the running, it is what makes the running arrive somewhere.

Goat

You take your bearings from whoever is nearest and today they are as lost as you are. Find the reference yourself, once, and you become the one others take their bearings from.

Monkey

You can find four routes and will enjoy comparing them. Sowilo has no opinion about routes. Fix the destination and the cleverness turns into an advantage rather than a delay.

Rooster

Your standards are exacting and attached to no particular heading, which turns them into criticism. Attach them today. The same rigour aimed at one fixed point is worth the whole day.

Dog

You steer by whoever you are loyal to and today they have not given you a heading. Take one yourself. Loyalty holds better when both of you know where you are going.

Pig

You go where the day is pleasant, which has served you better than most people admit. Set one fixed point and let the pleasantness arrange itself around it rather than instead of it.
