The Maturity number
Also called: Reality number, Power number
The number that switches on in the second half of life. Read as what the chart is heading toward once the earlier positions have finished arguing with each other, and usually recognisable from the mid-thirties.
At a glance
- Calculated from
- Life Path plus Expression
- Also called
- Reality number, Power number
- Weight in a reading
- Supporting early, primary late
- Activates around
- The mid-thirties, dominant from the mid-forties
- Master numbers kept
- Yes, 11, 22 and 33
- Sources combined
- Birth date and birth name
How to calculate your Maturity number
- Calculate the Life Path from the full birth date.
- Calculate the Expression from the full birth name.
- Add the two together. Use the reduced forms, and where one of them is a master number, most practitioners add the master number itself.
- Reduce the total to a single digit, stopping at 11, 22 or 33.
- Karmic debts are not conventionally read in this position, since the figure is derived rather than drawn directly from a name or a date.
Worked example
Maya June Ellerton, born 19 March 1974
| Life Path | From 19 March 1974 | 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Expression | From MAYA JUNE ELLERTON, total 65 | 11 |
| Sum | 7 + 11 = 18 → 1 + 8 | 9 |
Maturity 9
Adding the reduced 2 instead of the master 11 gives 7 + 2 = 9, the same answer. That is a coincidence of this chart rather than a rule: the two methods often differ, and practitioners split on which to use. Where they disagree, calculate both and say so.
What it describes
The Maturity number is the only position in a Pythagorean chart with a timing element built into it. Everything else describes a fixed shape; this describes something that arrives.
What it names is the resolution of the chart's central tension. The Life Path is the road and the Expression is the vehicle, and for most people those two are not a comfortable fit. The Maturity number is what the tradition says the mismatch turns into once the person has spent thirty or forty years living with it.
It is generally described as becoming noticeable in the mid-thirties and dominant from the mid-forties, which lines up with a change most people recognise: the point at which someone stops trying to be good at everything their circumstances demand and starts operating from something narrower and more their own.
Where it comes from
The Life Path and the Expression added together, which makes it the only position drawn from both sources. The birth date supplies the circumstances and the birth name supplies the equipment, and the sum is read as what the two produce between them over time.
That construction is the argument for the position, and it is a reasonable one on its own terms: the number cannot be independent of the rest of the chart because it is made from it, so it functions as a summary rather than as a new observation.
The method has one genuine ambiguity. When the Life Path or the Expression is a master number, some practitioners add the master and some add its reduced form, and the two routes frequently give different answers. There is no authority to settle it. The honest approach is to calculate both and treat a divergence as information about the chart rather than as a problem to hide.
How to read it
Read it as a direction rather than as a description of the person now, and read it late.
For anyone under about thirty it is a forecast, and should be given as one. For anyone over forty it is often the most accurate single number in their chart, and it is worth checking against how they actually spend their time rather than against how they describe themselves.
The most useful reading is the Maturity against the Soul Urge. Where they agree, the second half of life is described as delivering what the person always wanted, which is the most straightforwardly hopeful thing this system says about anybody. Where they conflict, the reading is that the person ends up somewhere effective and not quite where their heart was, and the tradition does not soften that.
Common misreadings
The first error is reading it as a prediction of events. It describes a mode of operating, not circumstances, and nothing about a Maturity 8 says the person will become wealthy.
The second is reading it too early. Given to a twenty-five-year-old as a present-tense description, it will not land, and the failure gets blamed on the system rather than on the timing.
The third is treating it as independent evidence. It is arithmetic performed on two numbers already in the chart, so when it agrees with them that is not confirmation. The only genuinely new information it carries is the timing claim.
The fourth is the master number ambiguity above, which is the most common reason two practitioners give different Maturity numbers for the same person.
How it interacts with the rest of the chart
Because it is derived from the Life Path and the Expression, the Maturity number always has a relationship to both, and the interesting question is which one it favours.
A Maturity number close in character to the Life Path describes someone who eventually stops resisting their circumstances. One close to the Expression describes someone who eventually gets to work in their own way regardless of circumstances. Practitioners read the first as acceptance and the second as arrival, and neither is better.
Against the Personality, the Maturity number often explains a change other people notice before the person does: the point at which someone starts being read differently by strangers, usually with more weight than before.
It is also the natural bridge to the timing layer of a chart. The Personal Year cycles say when things happen; the Maturity number says what the sequence is building toward.
Across the systems
Pythagorean. The Maturity number is standard in modern Western practice, though it is a later addition than the core four and treated by some writers as optional. It appears under three names, Maturity, Reality and Power, which is usually a sign of a position that entered the literature from several directions at once.
Chaldean. No equivalent. Chaldean numerology does not combine derived figures in this way.
Vedic. No direct equivalent either, though Vedic astrology's dasha system covers the same interpretive ground far more precisely, mapping planetary periods onto specific stretches of a life. Anyone drawn to the Maturity number's timing claim will find the dasha framework does the job with more structure behind it.
A note on the timing claim. The mid-thirties activation is the one dated assertion in the Pythagorean chart, and no source gives a derivation for it. Treat it as a rule of thumb that practitioners have found useful rather than as something the arithmetic supports.
Every number as a Maturity number
One line each for what the second half is described as heading toward. Follow any of them for the full reading.
- Maturity 1 Later life on your own terms, often after decades of arranging things around other people. Independence arrived at rather than started with.
- Maturity 2 A softening into partnership and shared work, frequently in someone who spent the first half insisting on doing it alone.
- Maturity 3 A late turn toward expression. The creative life that was postponed usually arrives here rather than earlier.
- Maturity 4 Consolidation. The second half spent building something durable out of material the first half scattered.
- Maturity 5 Later freedom, often unexpected: the constraints of the first half lifting rather than tightening.
- Maturity 6 Responsibility for a household or a community arriving in the second half, and being wanted rather than resented.
- Maturity 7 A turn inward. The outer questions of the first half hollow out and the same energy goes to meaning instead.
- Maturity 8 Authority and material responsibility arriving late, and being handled better than they would have been early.
- Maturity 9 A widening out. The second half spent on something impersonal, with the personal ambitions of the first quietly set down.
- Maturity 11/2 A late arrival of the intuitive and inspirational register, in someone who may have spent decades distrusting it.
- Maturity 22/4 A structural undertaking begun late, which is often when a 22 finally has the standing to start.
- Maturity 33/6 Service as a vocation arriving in the second half, usually built out of what the person learned the hard way in the first.
Karmic debt numbers are not conventionally read in this position, since the figure is derived from two other numbers rather than taken directly from a name or a date.
Questions for reflection
- What have I already stopped trying to be good at, and was that a loss?
- If the next twenty years are about one thing, what is the chart saying it is?
- Does the direction I am heading match what I actually want, or only what I am able to do?
