The South Node
Exactly opposite the dragon's head hangs its tail: the descending crossing, where the Moon's path drops south. The South Node is the already-mastered: gifts that arrive free, having been paid for somewhere, and the comfortable rut those gifts defend. India knows it as Ketu, the headless body, sated, sightless to the world, and for that very reason the giver of liberation. The tail releases what the head devours.

The node in ten facets
One point, read from every side: its astronomy, its tail, its Vedic person, its gifts, its rut and its release.
The descending crossing
The South Node is the Moon's southbound crossing of the ecliptic, always exactly opposite the North: one axis, two ends, moving backward through the zodiac together in the 18.6-year round. Whatever sign and house hold the head, their opposites hold the tail, without exception.
The Dragon's Tail
Medieval astrology's cauda draconis was read as decreasing: the tail that expels, depleting what it touched, malefic by diminution as the head was benefic by increase. The old ledger survives in the modern reading's economics, the South Node is where things drain, and where draining is the point.
Ketu, the headless
Vedic astrology's Ketu is the demon's body without its head: sated, appetite-free, blind to the world and therefore seeing past it. He signifies renunciation, loss that liberates, the psychic and the strange, rules three nakshatras, and holds a seven-year dasha famous for stripping and awakening.
The mastered gifts
The South Node's sign and house hold competences that arrive free: talents exercised without training, comforts that feel like home on first contact. The karmic frame says they were paid for in past lives; the practical frame says only that they cost this life nothing, which is their gift and their trap.
The comfortable rut
Free competence becomes the path of least resistance: under stress, the life slides South, doing again what it already does well, and calling the slide a choice. The rut is not the gifts' fault but their gravity, and the axis's whole drama is the backward pull against the forward hunger.
Release, not abandonment
The doctrine is release, not amputation: South Node gifts are meant to fund the North's journey, spent freely, given away, practised without clinging. The musician's ease supports the new craft; the caretaker's skill serves the new independence. The tail is provisions, not prison.
By sign and house
The South Node's sign names the over-practised quality, Libra's accommodation, Cancer's caretaking, and its house the arena of automatic competence and habitual retreat. Both read as the axis's past tense: real, valuable, and finished as a residence.
Planets conjunct the tail
A planet conjunct the South Node deepens the past's grip and gift at once: a South-Node Venus loves along old grooves, a South-Node Saturn carries old authority and old fear. Tradition read such planets as drained; moderns as inherited, mastery and baggage in one placement.
The tail in time
South-node eclipses, striking its transiting position twice a year in season, are release points: endings, completions, the past clearing. In Jyotisha, Ketu's seven-year dasha strips and simplifies, feared like Saturn's periods and credited afterward with the same honesty.
The working vocabulary
The mastered, the inherited, the comfortable, the draining, release, renunciation, provisions for the journey. Spent well: gifts funding growth. Clung to: the life lived backward. The point that answers: what are you already good at, and is it serving the journey or replacing it?
The dragon's tail
The South Node is the descending lunar crossing, always exactly opposite the North: one axis, two ends, and this is the end where things leave. Medieval astrology's cauda draconis was read as depleting, the tail that expels as the head swallows, and every later tradition has kept the direction of flow while revaluing it: the South Node is the already-mastered, the competence that arrives free, the comfort that feels like home on first contact, and equally the drain, the rut, the backward slide into what one already does well. Its Vedic person states the paradox best: Ketu, the headless body, has no appetite left, and precisely for that reason gives what the hungry head never can, release.
The gifts, and their gravity
The modern reading's foundation is the observation that South Node placements carry unearned competence: talents exercised without training, arenas navigated fluently from the start, the sign's and house's matters mastered as if remembered. The karmic frame explains the discount as past-life payment; the practical frame notes only that these gifts cost this life nothing, and that free things obey their own economics: they become the path of least resistance. Under stress, the life slides South, doing again what it already does well and calling the slide a choice, the accommodator accommodating harder, the caretaker taking more care, and the axis's whole drama is this backward gravity against the North's forward hunger. The rut is not the gifts' fault; it is their mass.
Ketu: loss that liberates
Jyotisha's Ketu is the severed demon's body: sated, sightless, needing nothing, and therefore the moksha-karaka, significator of liberation, the one graha whose deprivations are openly in the soul's interest. He signifies renunciation and the renounced, sudden loss that turns out to be release, the psychic, the strange and the past-mastered; he rules three nakshatras, among them root-cutting Mula; and his seven-year dasha is famous for stripping the inessential, feared beforehand like Saturn's periods and credited afterward with the same honesty. The Vedic reading gives the Western one its missing depth: the South Node is not merely where one has been, it is where having has already completed itself, and the remaining instruction is to let go well.
Release, not abandonment
The axis's most misread doctrine deserves its correction plainly: the South Node's instruction is release, not amputation. The gifts are not to be renounced into disuse, they are the provisions for the North's journey, spent freely because they renew, given away because giving is what mastered things are for. The musician's inherited ease funds the unfamiliar craft; the diplomat's automatic tact serves the new directness rather than replacing it; the caretaker's skill, freed of compulsion, becomes simple kindness. Clinging is the only misuse: the tail as residence instead of storehouse. Read this way, the South Node is the friendliest point in the chart, the one place where the work is already done, and only the accounting remains.
Reading and timing the tail
By sign, the South Node names the over-practised quality, read always against its Northern opposite as one axis, the polarity pages of the signs library supplying each pair's terms; by house, the arena of automatic competence and habitual retreat. A planet conjunct the South Node deepens both grip and gift: a South-Node Venus loves along old grooves, fluent and repetitive; a South-Node Jupiter inherits faith and must renew it; tradition read such planets as drained, moderns as inherited, and both are right by turns. In time, south-node eclipses, twice-yearly when the season strikes the tail's transiting position, are release points, endings, completions, the past clearing on schedule, and the nodal returns and reversals described on the North Node's page pose the axis's questions from this end too: at each crossing, what is finished, and what will the finishing fund?
How to read this page
The cards above give the point's ten facets: astronomy, the tail, Ketu, the gifts, the rut, the correction, sign and house readings, conjunct planets, timing and the vocabulary. The South Node is always read with its twin, the North Node's page completes this one, and the axis's mechanics live in the nodes and points library. The dragon's tail and its companions are part of the Tarot Academy compendium in all fifty-two languages.
