Black onyx
Onyx is agate with straight parallel bands, which is exactly what cameo carvers needed in order to cut a white figure against a dark ground. The solid black onyx sold today is a different thing: grey chalcedony dyed with a sugar and sulfuric acid process that has been in use since antiquity. Neither fact is a scandal, and both are worth knowing.

Properly a banded stone, sold as a solid black one, and almost always dyed by a method the Romans used.

What it actually is
Chalcedony, silicon dioxide, hardness 7, no cleavage. Onyx in the strict sense is agate whose bands are straight and parallel rather than curved or concentric.
That geometry is a technical requirement rather than an aesthetic one. To carve a cameo you need an upper layer of one colour over a lower layer of another, of even thickness across the piece, so that cutting down through the top layer reveals a clean contrasting background. Curved banding makes that impossible.
Sardonyx is the same structure with brown-red sard layers instead of black or grey ones, and it was the classical cameo material.
Solid black onyx as sold today is usually grey banded chalcedony treated to deposit carbon in its pores, producing an even black. The process uses a sugar solution followed by sulfuric acid, and it is documented in Roman sources.
Where it comes from
Brazil, Uruguay, India and Madagascar supply the material that becomes commercial onyx, which is the same agate supply that feeds the rest of the chalcedony trade.
The historic centres were the Mediterranean and later Idar-Oberstein in Germany, where the industrial dyeing methods used today were refined in the nineteenth century.
There is a persistent naming confusion worth clearing up. Onyx marble, sometimes called Mexican onyx or Egyptian alabaster, is a banded calcite or aragonite used for vases, lamps and bathroom fittings. It is a completely different material, much softer at around 3, and it dissolves in acid. If a large onyx bowl was cheap, it is calcite rather than chalcedony.
What the traditions claimed
The cameo tradition is the substantive one. Greek and Roman carvers produced portrait cameos and mythological scenes in sardonyx and onyx that are among the finest miniature sculpture of the ancient world, including the Gemma Augustea in Vienna. A cameo was a portable statement of allegiance and status, and the material choice was dictated by the technique.
The lapidary tradition treated black onyx more ambivalently than modern practice does. Several classical and medieval sources associate it with discord, bad dreams and grief, and Pliny reports that it was thought to provoke quarrels. That negative reading persisted in parts of Europe well into the modern period.
Its rehabilitation as a protective and grounding stone is largely twentieth-century, part of the general modern reading of the black ray as shelter and boundary.
In Victorian mourning jewellery black onyx sat alongside jet, and that association with grief and formality is the strongest thread connecting the older reading to the newer one.
How it is worked with
A good practical stone: hardness 7, no cleavage, cheap, and it looks deliberate rather than decorative, which suits its use.
Modern practice uses it for boundary and for endings, and the mourning association gives it a specific and honest role that most black stones do not have. It is a reasonable object to give someone marking a loss.
The cameo tradition is still alive and commissioning a carved piece is a genuinely traditional use, though good carving is expensive.
Onyx takes a very high polish and shows fingerprints, which is worth knowing if you want a desk object that stays looking clean.
Buying it honestly
Assume solid black onyx is dyed. This is normal, ancient, stable and not concealed by good dealers. Naturally solid black chalcedony exists and is uncommon.
The dye is permanent and does not lift with acetone, since it is carbon deposited in the pores rather than a surface stain.
Green, blue and red onyx are dyed too, and those colours have no natural counterpart in banded chalcedony at that saturation.
Black glass and black plastic are sold as onyx in cheap jewellery. The temperature test separates glass from chalcedony, and weight separates plastic from both.
Onyx marble, the soft banded calcite, is regularly sold as onyx and is a different material: it will scratch with a steel blade and fizz with vinegar.
Handle with care
No hazards. Inert, hard and safe in water. Be aware that a large cheap onyx bowl is probably calcite, which is soft and dissolves in acid.
