Rhodonite

Rhodonite is a manganese silicate, pink and veined with black manganese oxide, and it is the durable member of the pink manganese pair. Where rhodochrosite is soft, soluble and fragile, rhodonite at hardness 6 will survive a pocket. Russia used it at architectural scale, including a sarcophagus weighing several tonnes.

What it actually is

Manganese silicate, MnSiO3, triclinic, hardness 5.5 to 6.5, with two cleavage directions.

Its pink comes from manganese in the mineral's own structure. The black veining that gives rhodonite its distinctive appearance is manganese oxide, usually formed by weathering along fractures, and it is the reason no two pieces look alike.

Rhodonite is a silicate rather than a carbonate, which is the whole practical difference from rhodochrosite: it does not dissolve in acid, it is nearly twice as hard, and it survives handling.

Transparent gem-quality rhodonite exists and is rare, and it is a collector's stone rather than a jewellery one.

Colour can fade with prolonged exposure to strong light, and heat alters it.

Where it comes from

The Ural mountains of Russia produced the great historic material, and Russian imperial workshops used it at architectural scale. The sarcophagus of Empress Maria Alexandrovna in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg is carved from a single block of Ural rhodonite weighing several tonnes, and rhodonite columns and panels appear in Russian palaces.

New South Wales in Australia produces fine material, and Brazil, Peru, Madagascar, Sweden and the United States all supply it.

The Broken Hill deposit in Australia produces good crystals, and Massachusetts named rhodonite its state gem.

Most commercial material is the massive pink-and-black form rather than crystals, which is what fills the tumbled and carved market.

What the traditions claimed

Rhodonite was described and named in 1819, from the Greek for rose, so it has no ancient tradition.

The substantial history is Russian and is about craft rather than symbolism: Ural rhodonite, called orlets, was worked from the eighteenth century into some of the largest and finest hardstone objects ever made, and its use in imperial contexts is documented in detail.

That is a genuine cultural significance, comparable to Scottish cairngorm or Argentine rhodochrosite, and it is about a place and a workshop tradition rather than about a claimed property.

Modern crystal practice reads rhodonite as a stone of emotional healing after injury, often distinguished from rose quartz by being about working through something rather than being kind to yourself about it.

That distinction is recent but it is a genuinely useful one, and the black veining running through the pink gives it a fair visual basis.

How it is worked with

The working-through reading is the useful one and it is the best thing about this stone. Rose quartz is for kindness, rhodochrosite for old grief, and rhodonite for the part where you actually deal with something. Those are three distinguishable tasks and it is unusual for the tradition to be that precise.

Physically it is the practical pink stone: hardness 6, no acid sensitivity, safe in water, and cheap. A tumbled piece will survive a pocket for years.

Keep it out of prolonged strong sunlight, which can fade the pink.

Clean in lukewarm soapy water with a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning, since the cleavage and the oxide veining can be points of weakness.

Larger polished slabs show the black veining best and make good desk objects.

Buying it honestly

Rhodonite is inexpensive and rarely faked, but a few things are worth knowing.

Some material is stabilised with resin, particularly heavily veined pieces where the oxide zones are friable.

Dyed pink howlite and magnesite appear at cheap price points, and hardness separates them: a steel pin scratches howlite easily and will not scratch rhodonite.

Rhodochrosite is sometimes sold as rhodonite and vice versa. The difference is easy: rhodochrosite is banded rose and white with no black veining and fizzes with acid; rhodonite has black manganese oxide veining and does not fizz.

Thulite, a pink zoisite, and some pink jaspers are sold under rhodonite-adjacent names.

Colour that is unnaturally uniform and saturated suggests dye.

Handle with care

Hardness 6 with two cleavage directions, so it chips under hard knocks. Fades in prolonged strong sunlight. Safe in water and not acid-sensitive, unlike its carbonate cousin.
