Eight of Coins

Tarot: Tuesday, September 15

A card drawn from one of three decks

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Eight of Coins

The Tarot of Beijing
Eight of Coins

The cloisonné apprentice is at his bench with seven vessels finished on the shelf and the eighth taking shape under the file. Through the door the temple fair is going on and he does not hear it. The Eight of Coins is the card of chosen concentration: not talent, not luck, the repeated exact act that eventually becomes skill. Today is a bench day. Whatever you are trying to get good at, do the plain repetition of it and let the fair carry on without you. Nothing about this is exciting and that is the point.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Repetition is the thing you least want to hear about. The card offers it anyway, because the skill you want is on the other side of the seventh vessel. Do the boring version today, properly.

Taurus

This is your day exactly. Patient, physical, measurable work with a result you can hold at the end. Do not let anyone talk you out of the bench for a meeting that could have been an email.

Gemini

You have started six vessels and finished none. The apprentice has seven on the shelf. Today, pick one and take it all the way to the enamel. The fair will still be there.

Cancer

You do your best work when nobody needs you, which is rare. Today, close the door. The card is about a workshop, and a workshop with the family in it is a kitchen.

Leo

The apprentice has no audience and does not miss one. That is the discipline being offered. Make something today for the shelf rather than for the fair, and see how it changes the work.

Virgo

Your card, and the trap is refining the seventh vessel instead of starting the eighth. Seven is done. The skill grows in the next one, not in the polish on the last.

Libra

You will want company at the bench and the bench is a solitary place. Sit alone with the work for one session today. What you learn there you can share at the fair afterwards.

Scorpio

Nobody knows how many hours this has cost you and you prefer it that way. Fine. Just do not stop at seven. The eighth is the one that separates practised from good.

Sagittarius

The fair is louder than the file and you can hear both. Choose the file for one day. Mastery is not glamorous and the card makes no attempt to pretend otherwise.

Capricorn

You understand the bench better than anybody and you undervalue what it produces. Look at the seven on the shelf today. That is a body of work, not a warm-up.

Aquarius

You would rather invent a better technique than practise this one. The apprentice has one technique and does it eight times. Repetition is how the idea becomes a skill.

Pisces

You will drift from the bench to the door to see what the noise is. Set a timer, keep the door shut, and give the eighth vessel an uninterrupted hour. The drift can have the rest.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You can see three faster ways to make the vessel and the card is not interested in any of them. Slow, exact and repeated is today's whole method. Speed comes later and only from this.

Ox

You are the apprentice. Everything about this day is yours: the bench, the lamp, the closed door. The only warning is that the eighth vessel should look different from the first. Learn, do not just endure.

Tiger

You will do the eighth vessel in half the time and it will show. The card is about exactness, not output. Today one thing made properly outranks three made quickly.

Rabbit

The bench suits you and you rarely admit that. Take a full day of quiet, precise work without apologising for it. What you make when nobody is watching is your best.

Dragon

Eight vessels for a shelf is not the scale you think in. Today it is the scale that matters. The large thing is built out of these, and today is for one of them.

Snake

You already work this way and the card confirms it rather than instructing you. The only addition: put the seventh on the shelf where somebody can see it. Craft that stays hidden does not get commissioned.

Horse

The fair is calling and you can hear the drums from the bench. Stay. One day of concentration now buys you a fortnight of the kind of skill that lets you go to every fair afterwards.

Goat

You do fine work and you finish it only when somebody is expecting it. Today make one for nobody. The vessel with no client is where the skill actually grows.

Monkey

Repetition bores you and today is repetition. Make the eighth vessel exactly like the seventh and notice, precisely, where it differs anyway. That difference is the lesson.

Rooster

The apprentice would meet your standards. The question today is whether you would meet his patience. Do the work without stopping to grade it until the enamel has cooled.

Dog

You will help somebody else with their vessel and leave your own on the bench. Yours first today. The workshop has one lamp and it should be over your own work.

Pig

The fair is more fun than the bench and you know which one you are going to. Give the bench the morning. What you make there is what you will be paying for the fair with.
