Hagalaz is hail, and all three rune poems call it a grain: something that falls where the crop grows, looks like the crop, and flattens it. Somewhere in these seven days a disruption arrives that you did not plan, did not cause and could not reasonably have priced in. The rune is unusually clear that this is not a verdict on you. It is weather. The Old English stanza adds that afterwards the hail turns to water, and that clause is the useful half of the week. Expect the damage to be real and brief. Spend the first day after it on what actually broke rather than on why it happened. Then give the remaining days back to ordinary work, because the field is usually workable again sooner than it feels from inside the storm.
Runes: Week of Monday, October 12
A rune from each of the four scripts
This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.
Kaun is a sore, and both Norse poems mean it plainly: the Icelandic calls it the house of rotting flesh. This week something surfaces that has been left alone for a while: a conversation postponed, a cost nobody itemised, a hurt that was covered over rather than cleaned. It may already be larger than it was when you decided to leave it. The rune's point is timing. A sore found early is a nuisance and one found late is a different problem, so look this week rather than next. Raise the thing you have been calling too small to mention. If it turns out to be nothing, you have lost an awkward ten minutes. If it does not, you have caught it while it can still be handled.
Hægl is hail in the Old English poem: the whitest of grains, whirled down from heaven's air and rolled about by showers of wind. Then the stanza adds the clause the Norse poems leave out. Afterwards it turns to water. This week something lands from outside from an angle you were not watching and it will not ask whether the timing suits you. The poem's wind tosses the hail sideways as well as down, so the disruption may move around before it settles. Do not chase it. Deal with what it actually breaks, write down what it costs, and wait before deciding what it means. By the end of the week much of it is likely to have turned to water, and whatever is still on the ground is the only part that needs a plan.
Fern is the alder, and the Bríatharogam calls it the vanguard of warrior bands because shields were made from it. Alder takes a blade without splitting. It is also the wood of milk pails, chosen because it holds what is poured into it and does not rot when kept wet. This week the reading is about whatever is absorbing pressure on your behalf: a routine, a reserve of money, a colleague, someone at home. Something is taking blows so that you do not have to, and it is working, which is exactly why nobody is looking at it. Look at it. Ask whether the shield is being maintained or only relied on. One practical repair now, or one plain thank-you, is likely to cost far less than replacing the thing after it finally gives.
For your star sign
The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.
Aries
Hail from a clear sky, on nobody's schedule. Something breaks today that is not your fault and is still yours to handle. Skip the search for a lesson.
Taurus
Damage from outside, arriving without warning. Your steadiness is the whole asset. Deal with what actually broke rather than what it felt like.
Gemini
Hail passes as fast as it arrives. Do not build a theory about the season out of one bad hour.
Cancer
Something arrives from outside and you will take it personally. It was weather. Protect what matters and let the rest be damaged.
Leo
Hail does not consult anybody, which is the offence. There is nothing to answer and nothing to perform. Repair quietly.
Virgo
Damage without a cause you can act on. Assess what broke, fix what can be fixed, and stop looking for who let it happen.
Libra
Something disrupts the arrangement and you will try to keep everybody level through it. Deal with the damage first.
Scorpio
You will look for the intent behind it. There was none. Hagalaz is impersonal, which you will find harder than malice.
Sagittarius
Hail then sun. The disruption is real and brief. Do not leave on the strength of one bad hour.
Capricorn
Damage on a timetable you did not set is the specific insult. Repair the structure and revise the schedule without blame.
Aquarius
You will explain why the system permitted it. Correct and not useful today. Handle the damage. Deal with the person, not the principle.
Pisces
You will absorb it as a sign. It is hail. Fix what broke and let the meaning alone.
For your Chinese animal
The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Rat
You will assess the damage fast and accurately, which is the advantage. Repair, then resume. Take the opening and leave the surplus.
Ox
Damage from outside and your endurance is the whole answer. Repair steadily rather than urgently. Steady beats sudden here.
Tiger
You will charge at whoever seems responsible. Nobody is. Repair instead. Once, deliberately, and then stop. Nobody was aiming at you.
Rabbit
Something breaks and you will withdraw entirely. Fix the one thing that matters and stay. Silence will be read as consent.
Dragon
You will treat it as an affront to your standing. It is weather and nobody was aiming. Set the direction and delegate the rest.
Snake
You will look for the hidden cause. Hail has none. Repair the roof. Consider whether it is more useful said.
Horse
You will move on before the repair is done. Finish it; hail damage compounds if left. Pick one before the energy picks for you.
Goat
You will feel it as loss for longer than it warrants. Repair, then let it be over. Ask before you are emptied.
Monkey
You will improvise around the damage rather than fixing it. The improvisation becomes permanent. Ask whether it needs solving at all.
Rooster
You will inventory the damage precisely and delay the repair. Fix one thing first. Narrower question, not a firmer one.
Dog
You will keep watch for the next storm. Hail passes. Stand down. Aim it at what actually happened.
Pig
You will take it as a message. It is not addressed to anyone. Notice who is asking, and how often.
