In the Tarot of Beijing the Knight of Pentacles is a hutong deliveryman, and the deck names him the Courier of Coins. He wears a plain straw rain cape over a working jacket, and the cape is his armor: humble, made for weather rather than war. There is no horse. He pulls the cart by hand, so his own legs and back are the animal, which is the whole meaning of the rank. His fire here shows as endurance, will burned slowly like coal.

Behind him a cyclist dashes past in the opposite direction, the fast world overtaking the slow one, and the courier does not turn his head, because the cyclist carries nothing. At the roadside an old woman holds out a bowl of tea. Gray rain falls across the upper half of the card in long pale strokes, while the ground below is warm ochre flecked with gold: the weather is against him and the earth is for him. A small red seal sits in the corner, the maker's signature on a scene where nothing dramatic happens and everything important does.

The rank is Fire and the suit is Earth, so the card is the union of the two: momentum poured into patience, a flame that burns at the pace of an ox. The classical Knight of Pentacles carries the same paradox, the fiery part of Earth, ambition forced to move at the speed of soil. In this deck the paradox is resolved by the missing horse. With no animal to gallop, the Courier's drive has nowhere to go but into endurance, and endurance is exactly what the suit of Coins rewards. His whole teaching fits on the cart: carry much, but rope it down properly first. Nothing of lasting value is built overnight, and the load arrives only because he refuses to stop.

Waite gave the card the keywords utility, serviceableness, and responsibility, all on the normal and external plane. The green plumes on helmet and bridle echo oak leaves, the idiom that great oaks grow from small acorns, and the dark functional armor marks a worker rather than a warrior.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Crowley's Thoth Tarot the figure is restructured and renamed the Prince of Disks, the Lord of the Wild and Fertile Land. He abandons the horse for a chariot laden with geometric and agricultural symbols, and where the RWS Knight plows the field, the Prince designs the irrigation that sustains it. The Tarot of Beijing takes the reframing in the opposite, humbler direction. It removes the horse entirely and gives the work back to the man's own legs, turning the mounted knight into a courier on foot. The armor becomes a straw rain cape, the plowed field becomes a wet hutong, and the single coin moves from the rider's hands into the hub of his cart wheel.
