Why do different sources give different birthstones for this month?

Because they are copying different lists without saying which. The modern American list of 1912 and its revisions, older European traditional lists, and various regional lists all disagree, and none of them is an authority over the others. Until the eighteenth century it was ranked among the five precious stones. Then Brazil happened, and the price collapsed without the stone changing at all.

The modern answer

Amethyst, and like January this one is uncontested across the modern and traditional lists.

The name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning not drunken, and the Greeks and Romans genuinely used it on that theory, cutting drinking vessels from it and wearing it at feasts. The myth usually told about it, in which Dionysus is thwarted by a maiden turned to quartz and stains her with wine, is not Greek at all: it was written by the French poet Remy Belleau in the sixteenth century.

Amethyst is quartz coloured violet by iron that has been altered by natural radiation over geological time. Heat it and it turns yellow-orange, which is where most commercial citrine comes from.

The older lists

The traditional lists agree on amethyst for February, though some regional lists offer pearl, moonstone or jasper as alternates.

The stone's Christian associations are the deepest part of its history. The amethyst ring worn by a bishop in the Western church ties it to episcopal office, and the medieval lapidaries, following Marbode of Rennes, give it sobriety, vigilance in prayer and protection against intoxication. Leonardo da Vinci is often quoted as saying it dispels evil thoughts and quickens intelligence, though the attribution is not securely sourced.

Egypt mined amethyst at Wadi el-Hudi from the Middle Kingdom and set it in scarabs and beads, and Minoan and Mycenaean jewellery contains it.

What amethyst is actually like to own

Cheap, abundant and beautiful, which is a rare combination. Brazil and Uruguay produce enormous quantities, and a good tumbled or clustered piece costs very little. Deep Siberian-grade material with red flashes is another matter and commands real prices.

At hardness 7 with no cleavage it survives daily wear. Its one genuine weakness is light: ultraviolet destroys the colour centres that make it violet, and a piece left on a sunny windowsill will visibly pale within a year and cannot be restored.

That single fact contradicts the widely repeated advice to charge crystals in the sun, and it is worth knowing before you follow it.

Pearl and moonstone appear in some older February lists and suit a gentler reading of the month.

Aquarius and Pisces are the signs in February. Zodiac lists most often give Aquarius amethyst too, which makes for a rare agreement between the calendar and the sky, and Pisces aquamarine. In Jyotish, which uses the sidereal chart rather than the Western sun sign, Aquarius answers to Saturn and Pisces to Jupiter, whose gems are blue and yellow sapphire respectively.

Synthetic amethyst has been grown since the 1970s and is chemically identical to natural, difficult to identify without instruments, and honest when disclosed.
