The Rabbit Lord's Night

The Tarot of Beijing
The Rabbit Lord's Night

A Mid-Autumn midnight in a deserted hutong: the same walls, the same lane, the same window, and none of it quite certain. The Rabbit Lord's Night is the Moon in the Tarot of Beijing, and it describes the day the daylight map stops working. Today, something is happening under the surface and the rational mind will refuse to name where the path between the grey walls leads. It leads there anyway. Do not force the day into clarity; the card is half-light on purpose. Walk the familiar lane slowly, notice which of the ordinary things has become uncanny, and let that be the information.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will charge down the moonlit lane to get to the end. Today walk it. The Rabbit Lord's Night is half-light by design, and the running is how you miss what has become strange.

Taurus

The familiar walls are certain to you and today they are not. Let them be uncertain for one night. The card is the uncanny inside the ordinary, and your ordinary has it.

Gemini

You will explain the strangeness by morning. Today do not explain it. The path leads somewhere the rational mind refuses, and the explanation is the refusal.

Cancer

This is your card and its night. Today the undercurrents are strong and they are yours. Follow the lane without deciding where it goes; the Rabbit Lord knows.

Leo

There is no audience in the hutong at midnight. Today walk it alone and unwatched. What is happening below the surface does not perform, and neither should you.

Virgo

You will look for the fault in the lane. There is none; it is the same lane, uncanny. Today notice what has shifted without diagnosing it, which is a different act.

Libra

You will wait for the half-light to become daylight before you decide. It will not, today. Walk in the half-light and let the decision be tonight's rather than tomorrow's.

Scorpio

You live under the surface and the card is your weather. Today the addition is the ordinary: the same window, the same wall. Notice the familiar thing that has become strange, not the strange thing.

Sagittarius

You will leave the hutong for somewhere with better light. Today stay in it. The path leads somewhere, and it is here, between the grey walls, not elsewhere.

Capricorn

The daylight map is your instrument and today it stops working. Do not redraw it at midnight. Walk the lane by moonlight and trust that the walls are where they were.

Aquarius

You will theorise the uncanny. Today feel it. The Rabbit Lord's Night is the familiar made strange, and the theory is the familiar reasserting itself.

Pisces

You are at home in the half-light and could stay all night. Today walk to the end of the lane. The path leads somewhere, and the Rabbit Lord expects you to arrive.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You know every lane by daylight. Tonight the map fails. Walk slowly and notice what has become strange; that is the information, not the route.

Ox

You will walk the lane the same way you always do. Today notice that it is not the same lane. The Rabbit Lord's Night is the familiar shifted, and you are the one who would miss it.

Tiger

You will charge the uncanny thing. Today walk past it slowly. The undercurrent is not an enemy; it is a direction, and the charge takes you the wrong way.

Rabbit

The Rabbit Lord is your guardian and tonight is your night. Walk the hutong without fear. Nothing he keeps is lost, and you are kept.

Dragon

Half-light offends your sense of the visible. Today let it be half. What is happening under the surface does not need your torch, and the torch drives it under.

Snake

You are made for the moonlit lane. Today the card asks you to walk it with someone. The uncanny is easier to read with a second pair of eyes, even yours.

Horse

You will bolt out of the hutong at the first strange shadow. Stay. Tonight the shadow is the path, and the bolting is how you lose it.

Goat

The deserted lane frightens you and the Rabbit Lord keeps it. Today walk it anyway, slowly. The uncanny is not danger; it is depth, and you can stand in depth.

Monkey

You will make the strangeness funny. Tonight let it be strange. The card is half-light and undercurrent, and the joke is the daylight map trying to come back.

Rooster

You will inspect the lane for what is wrong. Nothing is wrong; it is the same lane at midnight. Today notice the shift without correcting it.

Dog

You will guard the lane against the uncanny. Tonight the uncanny is what you are guarding. Walk it and let what is under the surface come up in its own time.

Pig

You will go home rather than walk the moonlit lane. Tonight walk it. The Rabbit Lord's Night is where the important thing is happening, and home is where it is not.
