Algiz is the elk-sedge, and the Anglo-Saxon poem is precise about it: it grows in the marsh, it wounds grimly, it burns with blood any warrior who takes hold of it. The rune is a guard that injures whatever reaches for you. This week you are protected, and the protection has an edge. Something or someone that would take hold of you gets cut for the attempt, and you need do nothing for that to happen except stand where you stand. The instruction is not to go out looking for the hand. Sedge does not hunt. It grows in its marsh, sharp, and lets the marsh be the warning.
Runes: Week of Monday, September 21
A rune from each of the four scripts
This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.
Ýr is the yew in the Younger Futhark, and the Norse poems read it as a bow: winter-greenest of trees, and it crackles when it burns. A bow is stored tension, drawn, held, not yet released. This week you are drawn. Something has been pulled back and is being held at full stretch, and the whole skill is in the holding. Do not loose it early to relieve the strain, and do not lower it because your arm is tired. The bow that is held steadiest is the one whose arrow goes where it was aimed, and the release is a different week's business.
Eolhx is the elk-sedge in English, the marsh plant the poem says wounds grimly anyone who grasps it. It is a defence that does nothing until something reaches for it, which is the point. This week your protection is passive and complete. You do not have to raise it, explain it or demonstrate it. Whoever takes hold uninvited finds out what the sedge is, and whoever does not never learns there was a boundary at all. Keep the marsh. Do not go looking for hands to cut.
Tinne is an ingot, the kennings say: one of three parts of a weapon, the marrow of charcoal. It is refined metal, a component of something that has to work, and it is not the finished thing. This week you are one part of three. What you contribute has been refined, it is good, and on its own it is not a weapon. Find the other two parts and let the forging happen. The ingot that insists on being the whole sword ends up as a bar on a shelf, and the one that accepts being a third gets to cut.
For your star sign
The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.
Aries
A guard that cuts whatever reaches for you. Protection is real today and it is not gentle, and the same edge holds people off.
Taurus
Elk-sedge wounds the hand that grasps it. You are defended today, which means nothing needs doing about it.
Gemini
Protection that works invisibly until tested. Nothing is required of you; the guard does not need your help.
Cancer
You are safer than you feel today. The defence is already in place and has been for a while.
Leo
A guard nobody sees, which is unsatisfying and effective. Let it work without pointing it out. No audience is required for this one.
Virgo
Protection is functioning correctly and you will inspect it anyway. Leave it. It does not improve under scrutiny.
Libra
The same edge that protects you keeps people at a distance. Notice who is being held off, and whether you meant it.
Scorpio
Your defences are excellent and today they may be excessive. Ask who cannot reach you that you would like to.
Sagittarius
You are guarded whether or not you attend to it. Go and do something else with the day.
Capricorn
The structure is holding. Nothing needs reinforcing today, however available the reinforcing feels. Decide where it ends before you begin.
Aquarius
Protection you did not design is working. Accept it rather than auditing the mechanism. Deal with the person, not the principle.
Pisces
You are more protected than you feel. The anxiety today is habit rather than information. Put it in words somebody can answer.
For your Chinese animal
The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Rat
You are guarded today and nothing needs adding to it. Spend the attention elsewhere rather than checking the perimeter again.
Ox
The defence is in place and holding. Your instinct to reinforce it further is habit rather than need today.
Tiger
Nothing is attacking, which will feel like a waste of readiness. Stand down and use the day. Once, deliberately, and then stop.
Rabbit
You are safer than you feel. The guard has been working quietly for some time and does not need you.
Dragon
A protection nobody can see, which is unsatisfying and entirely effective. Let it work unremarked. Set the direction and delegate the rest.
Snake
The defence functions without your management. Leave it alone; inspection is not maintenance here. Consider whether it is more useful said.
Horse
You are held safe and free to move. Go somewhere rather than standing watch over nothing. Pick one before the energy picks for you.
Goat
You are protected today, genuinely, and the anxiety is left over from last week. Let it go. Ask before you are emptied.
Monkey
Nothing needs outwitting today. The guard is structural rather than clever, and it holds. Ask whether it needs solving at all.
Rooster
The arrangement is sound. Checking it again will not make it sounder and will cost you the morning.
Dog
Your watch is unnecessary today, which is the hardest thing to accept. Nothing is coming. Aim it at what actually happened.
Pig
You are safe and will still feel exposed. That is the feeling rather than the situation. Notice who is asking, and how often.
