Watermelon tourmaline

Watermelon tourmaline is a single elbaite crystal that was pink at its core and green at its edge, because the chemistry of the fluid it grew in changed while it was forming. Sliced across, it looks exactly like its name, and the boundary between the colours is a genuine record of a change in conditions.

What it actually is

Elbaite, the lithium-bearing tourmaline, trigonal, hardness 7 to 7.5, with no significant cleavage.

Tourmaline's structure accepts a wide range of elements, and its chemistry can shift while a crystal is growing. Where the fluid changes composition, the crystal records it: manganese-rich zones grow pink, and iron or chromium-rich zones grow green, and the boundary between them is sharp because the change was.

Watermelon tourmaline specifically has a pink core surrounded by a green outer layer, usually with a thin colourless or white zone between them. Cutting a slice across the crystal shows all three.

Bicolour and tricolour tourmalines, which change colour along their length rather than from core to rind, form the same way.

Tourmaline crystals are striated lengthwise and have rounded triangular cross-sections.

Where it comes from

Brazil produces the classic material, particularly from Minas Gerais. Afghanistan, Nigeria, Madagascar and Mozambique are significant sources.

Maine and California in the United States produce fine elbaite, and the Californian mines at Himalaya and Tourmaline Queen have a specific history: their pink tourmaline was exported in quantity to China because the Dowager Empress Cixi favoured it, and when the Qing dynasty fell in 1911 the market collapsed with it.

Paraiba tourmaline, coloured by copper and found in Brazil in 1989, is among the most expensive gems by weight in the world, and it is a different material from watermelon tourmaline despite being the same species.

Good watermelon slices with a clean colour boundary are not cheap.

What the traditions claimed

Tourmaline in general has little ancient European tradition, since it was not recognised as a distinct species until the eighteenth century, and watermelon tourmaline as a named material is more recent still.

The Sinhalese word turmali, meaning mixed-coloured stones, gave the mineral its name, which is a fair description of exactly this material.

Dutch and later European interest in the eighteenth century focused on the electrical properties rather than on symbolism.

Modern practice reads watermelon tourmaline as a stone of emotional integration and of reconciling opposites, on the strength of its two colours coexisting in one crystal. That reading is recent and is essentially a reading of the appearance.

It is one of the better modern assignments, because the appearance genuinely does record something: a change in conditions preserved in a single object.

How it is worked with

The reconciliation reading is usable and the underlying fact makes it better than most. This is not two stones stuck together; it is one crystal that changed and kept both states.

That suits questions about continuity through change, about being the same person before and after something, and about whether two apparently opposed things in a life are actually one process.

Slices show it best and are the usual form. Tumbled pieces rarely display the zoning well.

For wear, tourmaline is hard at 7.5 but zoned crystals are often fractured along the colour boundaries, so a slice is a fragile object despite the hardness number. Handle it as a specimen rather than as jewellery.

No ultrasonic and no steam cleaning, since internal fractures are common.

Buying it honestly

Watermelon tourmaline is valuable enough to be faked.

Assembled doublets, where a pink and a green stone are glued together, appear and can be spotted by looking at the join under magnification for a flat plane with trapped bubbles.

Resin and glass imitations exist, and printed or dyed pieces show colour that sits on the surface rather than through the stone.

In a genuine slice the colour boundary is a crystallographic zone: it follows the crystal's internal geometry, usually forming a rounded triangular outline matching the crystal's cross-section, and it is slightly irregular rather than perfectly circular.

Paraiba is a separate fraud problem entirely, with enormous price differentials and copper content that only laboratory testing confirms.

Heat and irradiation treatments are used on coloured tourmaline generally and should be disclosed.

Handle with care

Hardness 7.5, but zoned crystals are frequently fractured along colour boundaries and slices are fragile. No ultrasonic, no steam. Safe in water otherwise.
