Black tourmaline
Black tourmaline, properly schorl, is the single most-sold protective stone in modern practice. It is also genuinely odd: heat it and opposite electrical charges develop at each end, which is why eighteenth-century Dutch traders used it to draw ash out of a pipe and called it aschentrekker, the ash-drawer.

What it actually is
Schorl, the iron-rich end of the tourmaline group, a complex borosilicate, trigonal, hardness 7 to 7.5, with no significant cleavage.
Tourmaline's chemistry is famously accommodating; mineralogists sometimes describe it as a rubbish bin for elements. Iron gives black schorl, lithium and manganese give the pink and green elbaite, and magnesium gives brown dravite.
Tourmaline is both piezoelectric, generating a charge under mechanical stress, and pyroelectric, generating opposite charges at either end when heated or cooled. The pyroelectric effect is strong enough to be demonstrated easily: a warmed crystal will attract ash and small paper fragments.
Schorl crystals are typically striated lengthwise and have a rounded triangular cross-section, which is a good identification feature.
At hardness 7.5 with no cleavage it is one of the most physically robust stones in the catalogue.
Where it comes from
Brazil, particularly Minas Gerais, produces vast quantities. Pakistan and Afghanistan produce fine crystals from pegmatites, and Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria and the United States all supply the market.
Schorl is by far the most common tourmaline species and makes up around ninety-five per cent of all tourmaline, which is why it is so cheap.
The pyroelectric property was noticed in Europe when Dutch East India Company traders brought tourmaline back from Sri Lanka in the early eighteenth century, and the aschentrekker name records the demonstration they used to sell it.
Tourmaline was not clearly distinguished as a mineral species until the eighteenth century, and before that dark tourmaline was frequently confused with other black stones.
What the traditions claimed
Because tourmaline was not identified as a distinct species until relatively late, it has no clear ancient tradition of its own. Black stones generally carried protective meanings across the ancient world, and any black tourmaline used then would have been read as a black stone rather than as tourmaline.
Sri Lankan and Indian sources describe coloured tourmaline, and the Sinhalese word turmali, for mixed-coloured stones, is the origin of the English name.
The stone's modern prominence is genuinely modern. Black tourmaline became the standard protective recommendation in crystal practice during the late twentieth century, usually described in terms of absorbing or deflecting negative energy, and more recently in terms of electromagnetic shielding.
Neither claim has support. The electromagnetic one is worth naming specifically: a small piece of schorl does not attenuate radio-frequency fields in any measurable way, and no evidence links ordinary domestic fields to harm in the first place.
How it is worked with
What black tourmaline does reliably is mark a limit, and that is the honest brief. A stone at a threshold, on a desk facing a room, or in a pocket before a difficult meeting is a physical statement of where something stops.
That is genuinely useful, and it does not require believing in absorption. If holding one helps you hold a boundary, the effect is yours.
Physically it is the best dark stone in the catalogue for carrying: hardness 7.5, no cleavage, cheap, and it needs no protection from light, water or heat.
Rough crystals with their lengthwise striations are more interesting objects than tumbled pieces and cost very little.
For anyone told to buy one to shield a router or a phone, the money is better spent on almost anything else.
Buying it honestly
Black tourmaline is cheap enough that faking it makes little sense.
The main substitutions are black obsidian, which is glass and softer at 5.5, and black onyx, which is dyed chalcedony. Hardness separates tourmaline from obsidian, and the lengthwise striations and triangular cross-section identify rough schorl at a glance.
Some cheap jewellery uses black glass or resin.
Watch for tourmalinated quartz sold as black tourmaline; it is clear quartz with schorl needles inside and is a different, usually more expensive material.
The genuine concern here is not authenticity but claims. Any seller marketing black tourmaline for electromagnetic protection is making an assertion nothing supports, and that is worth weighing when deciding whether to trust their other descriptions.
Handle with care
No hazards. Hard, stable, safe in water and sunlight. Rough crystals can have sharp terminated ends.
