Azurite

Azurite is the blue copper carbonate that Europe used as a pigment before ultramarine became affordable. Its defining property is instability: in the presence of moisture it slowly converts to malachite, which is why blue skies in a good many medieval and Renaissance paintings are now green.

What it actually is

Basic copper carbonate, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, monoclinic, hardness 3.5 to 4, with good cleavage.

Its deep blue comes from copper in a particular coordination, and the same copper in a different carbonate arrangement is malachite's green. That closeness is why azurite alters to malachite over time in the presence of moisture, a change called pseudomorphism when the malachite retains azurite's crystal shape.

Azurite crystals can be sharp and well formed, and specimens from Morocco and Arizona are prized. Massive and botryoidal material is also common, often intergrown with malachite in the mixed rock called azurmalachite.

Being a carbonate it dissolves in acid. Being a copper mineral it is toxic as dust and in water.

It is also light-sensitive, and prolonged exposure fades and alters specimens.

Where it comes from

Morocco's Touissit and Kerrouchen produce fine crystals, and Bisbee in Arizona produced classic American material. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Australia, Mexico and France all supply specimens.

Azurite forms in the oxidised zone above copper deposits, the same setting as malachite, and the two are almost always found together.

Historically it was mined in France at Chessy, near Lyon, which gave it the old name chessylite, and in Germany and Hungary for pigment production.

European painters used it heavily from the medieval period until the eighteenth century, when synthetic Prussian blue and later synthetic ultramarine replaced it.

What the traditions claimed

The pigment history is the substance of azurite's story. It was the standard blue of European painting for centuries, cheaper than ultramarine and far more available, and it appears in manuscript illumination, panel painting and wall painting across the continent.

Its instability was known and complained about. Contracts and treatises distinguish between azurite and the more expensive ultramarine partly on the grounds of permanence, and conservators today routinely encounter altered azurite in works of the period.

Beyond the pigment, azurite has less traditional lore than most stones here, largely because it is soft, unstable and rarely worked into jewellery.

Some Chinese and Egyptian use is recorded, generally as a pigment rather than as an amulet material.

Modern crystal practice reads it as a stone of insight and of intellectual clarity, often paired with malachite, and that reading is twentieth-century.

How it is worked with

This is a specimen mineral, not a working stone. At hardness 3.5, cleavable, light-sensitive, acid-soluble and copper-bearing, essentially every category of fragility applies to it.

Keep it in a case out of direct light, dust it with a soft brush, and do not wash it.

The interesting thing to sit with is its instability. Azurite is a mineral that is visibly on its way to becoming something else, slowly, and there are few better objects for a reflection about change that cannot be stopped.

The azurite-malachite combination pieces are the practical way to own it, since they are more robust than crystals and show both stages of the same copper at once.

If you want a durable deep blue, lapis or sodalite are the answers.

Buying it honestly

Azurite is not usually faked, because good specimens command real prices among collectors and beginners rarely encounter it.

The commonest issue is stabilisation: many specimens are consolidated with resin or lacquer to prevent crumbling, which is standard and should be disclosed.

Dyed howlite and dyed magnesite appear in the deep blue range at cheap price points.

Azurmalachite, the mixed material, is genuine and often sold as azurite; it contains less azurite than the name implies.

Watch for specimens that have already begun to alter: green patches on a blue specimen indicate conversion to malachite in progress, which will continue.

An acid test fizzes on both azurite and malachite, since both are carbonates.

Handle with care

Copper carbonate: toxic as dust and in water. Never soak, never make a direct-contact elixir, never grind without extraction. Very soft at 3.5, cleavable, dissolved by acid, and faded and altered by light. Keep it in a case.
