Kyanite

Kyanite is the mineralogist's favourite oddity: a single crystal with two markedly different hardnesses depending on the direction you scratch it. Along the length of a blade it is about 4.5 and a steel knife will mark it; across the blade it is around 7 and it will not. Its old name, disthene, means exactly that.

What it actually is

Aluminium silicate, Al2SiO5, triclinic, with perfect cleavage in one direction and hardness that varies with direction: roughly 4.5 along the length of a crystal and around 7 across it.

That anisotropy is caused by the arrangement of bonds in the crystal structure being much weaker along one axis than across it. It is unusual enough to be a standard teaching example, and its old name disthene, from the Greek for two strengths, records it.

Kyanite is polymorphic with andalusite and sillimanite: all three are Al2SiO5, and which one forms depends on the pressure and temperature. That makes kyanite diagnostic, and geologists use its presence to read the conditions a metamorphic rock experienced.

Blue is the familiar colour, from iron and titanium, and green, orange, black and colourless material also occurs. Orange kyanite from Tanzania is coloured by manganese.

Where it comes from

Nepal produces the finest gem-quality blue kyanite from Himalayan deposits. Brazil, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, India and Switzerland all supply material.

Kyanite occurs in high-pressure metamorphic rocks, particularly aluminium-rich schists and gneisses, and it is common enough as a rock-forming mineral to be mined industrially for refractories, since it converts to mullite at high temperature and is used in furnace linings and spark plugs.

Its use as a compass needle in early Europe is sometimes claimed but is poorly documented; the mineral is not magnetic and any such use would have relied on something other than magnetism.

The gem trade's interest is comparatively recent and remains modest, largely because the anisotropic hardness and the perfect cleavage make it difficult to cut and set.

What the traditions claimed

There is no significant ancient tradition. Kyanite was named in 1789 from the Greek for dark blue, and it was not distinguished before then.

Its modern reading is unusually specific and comes from twentieth-century crystal writing: kyanite is described as a stone of alignment, and it is one of the few stones commonly said not to require cleansing, on the grounds that it does not accumulate anything.

That second claim is worth noting for what it reveals rather than for its truth. No stone accumulates anything measurable, so the claim that kyanite is exempt is a distinction without a difference. Its interest is as an example of how internal rules develop inside a practice.

The alignment reading follows the mineral's blade habit and its directional properties, and as a reading of appearance it is coherent.

How it is worked with

The two-strengths property is the honest thing to work with, and it is a good prompt. A material that is soft in one direction and hard in another is a serviceable image for a person, and the practical question it raises is which direction you are being tested along.

The alignment reading, though modern, is usable: kyanite suits questions about whether the parts of a situation are pointing the same way.

For handling, treat it as a specimen. Blades are easy to split along the cleavage, and even a well-cut stone should be set protectively.

It is inexpensive in rough blade form, and a raw blade is a more interesting object than a cut stone, since you can test the two hardnesses yourself with a steel pin along and across it.

Buying it honestly

Kyanite is not usually treated and is not commonly faked, since good material is inexpensive.

Blue material is occasionally confused with sapphire in rough form and with blue tourmaline, and hardness testing separates them immediately.

Some orange and green material is dyed, and dyed kyanite shows colour concentrated along the cleavage planes.

Glass is sold as kyanite in cheap jewellery.

The genuine buying issue is condition rather than authenticity: kyanite blades chip and split easily, and pieces are often damaged in handling and transport. Examine the edges before buying.

Cut kyanite is uncommon and expensive relative to the material, because cutting it is difficult and wasteful.
