Kunzite
Kunzite is pink spodumene, a lithium mineral, named in 1902 for the gemmologist George Kunz who first described it. It is the clearest case in the catalogue of a gem with an honest, visible defect: its colour is destroyed by ultraviolet light, and a stone worn daily in strong sun will visibly pale within a year or two.

What it actually is
Spodumene, a lithium aluminium silicate pyroxene, monoclinic, hardness 6.5 to 7, with two perfect cleavage directions meeting at close to ninety degrees.
Its pink to violet colour comes from manganese in colour centres, and those centres are destroyed by ultraviolet light. The fading is permanent and can be visible within months of daily outdoor wear.
Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, showing the deepest colour looking down the length of the crystal, so cutters orient stones to face up along that axis, which is why kunzite is usually cut in long shapes.
The two cleavage directions plus a tendency to part make it one of the most difficult common gems to cut, and cutters charge accordingly.
Hiddenite is the green chromium-coloured variety of the same mineral.
Where it comes from
The Pala district of San Diego County, California, produced the original 1902 material from lithium pegmatites, and those mines are historically significant.
Afghanistan's Nuristan and Kunar provinces are now major sources and produce large clean crystals. Brazil, Madagascar and Pakistan also supply the market.
Spodumene itself is an important lithium ore, and the same pegmatites that yield gem kunzite are of interest for lithium extraction, which is a modern economic dimension most gems do not have.
George Kunz, Tiffany's chief gemmologist, described the stone in 1902 and had it named for him by Charles Baskerville. Kunz was also responsible for suggesting the name morganite in 1911, which gives a sense of his influence on gem nomenclature.
What the traditions claimed
There is no traditional lore, because the material was not identified until 1902.
Kunzite's meanings come entirely from twentieth-century crystal writing, where it is read as a stone of the open heart, of unconditional affection and of emotional release. That reading sits within the general modern pink ray and is not distinguishable from it in substance.
What kunzite does have that is genuinely its own is the fading, and it is worth treating that as the interesting fact rather than searching for lore that does not exist. A gem that is visibly diminished by daylight is a rare thing, and jewellers historically sold it as an evening stone on exactly that basis, to be worn under artificial light.
That is a real and slightly melancholy property, and it makes kunzite a better prompt for reflection than most stones with longer pedigrees.
How it is worked with
If you own kunzite, the practice is largely about care, and that care is itself the point: this is a stone that asks you to protect it.
Keep it in a box. A jewellery roll, a drawer, anywhere dark. Wear it in the evening or indoors, and accept that a piece worn constantly outdoors will pale.
For reflection, the honest reading is about openness that costs something to maintain, which is a more interesting brief than unconditional love and follows directly from the stone's behaviour.
For wear, treat it carefully. Two cleavage directions at close to ninety degrees mean a knock can split it cleanly, and a protective setting is essential.
Warm soapy water only. No ultrasonic, no steam, no heat.
Buying it honestly
Kunzite is not usually treated to create colour, though some pale material is irradiated to deepen it, and irradiated colour fades faster than natural colour.
Heat treatment can shift colour and is used occasionally.
Pink glass, synthetic pink spinel, pink cubic zirconia, morganite and pink topaz are all sold in its place. Kunzite's strong pleochroism and its two cleavage directions distinguish it, and a gemmologist separates it instantly by refractive index.
The most common misrepresentation is silence about the fading. A seller who does not mention that kunzite loses colour in light is either uninformed or hoping you are, and it is a fair question to ask directly.
Buying kunzite that has already been in a shop window for a long time is a real risk.
Handle with care
Fades permanently in ultraviolet light, including ordinary daylight, and irradiated material fades faster. Two cleavage directions mean it splits under knocks. Store in the dark, wear in the evening, and never clean it ultrasonically or with heat.
