The planet of love and value

Venus is the lesser benefic, the kind planet of the night team, and astrology's treasurer of everything precious: love, beauty, pleasure, art, money, peace, agreement. In the chart she describes what a person loves and how, what they find beautiful, what they attract and are attracted by, and what worth means to them in every register from affection to currency. Her gifts are grace, charm, harmony and enjoyment; her shadows are the gifts overindulged, vanity, indolence, appeasement, the sweet tooth of the soul. No planet's questions are asked more often of astrologers, because no questions are asked more often anywhere: what do I love, and does it love me back.

Ishtar: love and war and twenty-one years of data

Venus's Babylonian career is the best documented of any planet's, and this compendium tells it in full. She was Ishtar, goddess of love and of war, the great lady of heaven whose omens governed rain, harvest, desire and the fortunes of kings; her star opened and closed the day. Under King Ammisaduqa in the seventeenth century BCE, her risings and settings were logged for twenty-one years, and the record, Tablet 63 of the omen series, is the oldest substantial planetary document on earth, keystone of Bronze Age chronology and subject of its own page in the Babylonian section. Babylon also knew early what Greece took centuries to settle: that the morning star and evening star are one body, one goddess showing two faces, a discovery encoded in the tablet's very structure.

Two faces, two homes, one exaltation

The two faces became doctrine. Venus as morning star, rising before the Sun, was read by Hellenistic astrology as ardent, forward, loving first and asking after; as evening star, following the Sun, gracious, considered, loving in response. Her two rulerships map the same doubleness onto the zodiac: earthy Taurus, the Venus of orchards, skin, meals and possession, and airy Libra, the Venus of proportion, courtesy, partnership and design, body's pleasure and mind's harmony, as their pages in the signs library describe. Her exaltation is Pisces, at the twenty-seventh degree, by the Babylonian scheme of secret places: love perfected where boundaries dissolve, affection without conditions. The mirrors state her lessons: detriment in Aries and Scorpio, desire taxed by conquest and by intensity; fall in Virgo, where the critical eye chills the warm one.

The eight-year rose

Venus owns the sky's most beautiful geometry. She meets the Sun five times in eight years, and the meeting points trace a near-perfect five-petalled rose, a pentagram, around the zodiac, repeating almost to the day every eight years, the same eight-year rhythm the Venus Tablet already encodes and the Systems A and B page shows the Babylonian mathematicians exploiting. The rose is why Venus retrogrades, once every nineteen months for about six weeks, are read as reviews of the heart: old loves and old values return for reassessment on a schedule as regular as the petals. That the planet of beauty draws the sky's one flower is the kind of coincidence astrology was invented to enjoy.

Venus in signs, houses and aspects

Venus's sign is the style of loving and valuing: in fire she loves ardently and competitively, in earth sensually and loyally, in air conversationally and aesthetically, in water deeply and mergingly. Her house is where grace concentrates, the money of the second, the partnerships of the seventh, the public charm of the tenth. Her aspects are the heart's diplomacy: with the Moon, affection and comfort run together; with Mars, desire and pursuit, the classic chemistry aspect; with Jupiter, generosity and excess; with Saturn, love that must be earned and lasts; with Neptune, romance and its illusions. And her condition answers the perennial questions, how a person attracts, what they spend on, what beauty persuades them, which no chart reading skips, because no life does.

Copper, Friday, the pharmacy of comfort

Venus's chain of correspondences is the pleasant aisle of every tradition's inventory. Her metal is copper, the mirror-metal of Cyprus, her legendary island; her day is Friday, Freya's day in the Germanic tongues, dies Veneris in the Romance ones, the goddess holding her slot in both families; her gems the emerald and the rose quartz, her plants the rose, the myrtle and the sweet herbs, her arts music and perfume. In the body she governs the throat and kidneys through her signs, and the skin by her nature, voice, balance and touch, and her remedies were always the agreeable ones: baths, sweetness, harmony, the pharmacy of comfort whose Babylonian roots the micro-zodiac page traces.

Shukra and the unbroken goddess

Jyotisha honours Venus as Shukra: teacher of the asuras, keeper of the art of reviving the dead, significator of love, marriage, luxury, poetry and vehicles, ruling Vrishabha and Tula with the same Pisces exaltation, and holding, at twenty years, the longest dasha period of any planet, pleasure given the longest lease. Westward, the goddess's succession never broke: Sumerian Inanna became Akkadian Ishtar, Phoenician Astarte, Greek Aphrodite, Roman Venus, five millennia of one office, and Friday still bears her name across two language families. No other planet's divinity has been so continuously employed, which is its own comment on what humanity most reliably wants from the sky.
