Apatite

Apatite is the mineral group that makes up the hard parts of vertebrates: your teeth and bones are largely hydroxyapatite. It is also a gem, usually blue or green, and a critical industrial mineral, since apatite rock is the source of essentially all phosphate fertiliser and therefore of a large fraction of the world's food supply.

What it actually is

A group of calcium phosphate minerals, Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH), hexagonal, hardness 5, with poor cleavage but noticeable brittleness.

The three main species are fluorapatite, chlorapatite and hydroxyapatite, distinguished by which anion dominates. Hydroxyapatite, with fluoride substitution, is what tooth enamel and bone mineral are made of.

Gem apatite occurs in blue, green, yellow, violet and colourless. Neon blue-green material from Madagascar, coloured by trace elements, is the most sought after. Cat's eye apatite occurs where fine inclusions produce chatoyancy.

Apatite's hardness of 5 defines that point on the Mohs scale, which is its other claim to fame.

It is brittle and heat-sensitive, and it dissolves in acid, which is why acidic diets and bacterial acids damage teeth.

Where it comes from

Brazil and Madagascar produce most gem material, with the Madagascan neon blue-green being the commercially significant find of recent decades. Mexico, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Canada and Norway also produce it.

Industrially, apatite-rich phosphate rock is mined at enormous scale in Morocco, China, the United States and Russia, and it is the source of essentially all phosphate fertiliser. Morocco alone holds the majority of known reserves, which makes phosphate supply a genuine geopolitical question.

That industrial dimension matters more to the world than the gem trade does. Modern agriculture depends on mined phosphate, the supply is finite and concentrated, and there is no substitute for phosphorus in biology.

Gem-quality apatite remains a collector's stone rather than a mainstream jewellery material, largely because of its softness.

What the traditions claimed

Apatite has no ancient tradition. It was named in 1786 from the Greek apatao, to deceive, because it had been repeatedly mistaken for other minerals, which is a candid origin for a name.

Its modern crystal reading ties it to appetite in both the literal and figurative senses, and it is one of the very few stones commonly associated with hunger and with motivation to eat or not to eat. That association is worth flagging carefully: this library does not endorse any stone as a tool for appetite suppression or weight control, and any source presenting it that way is making a claim capable of harm.

The more defensible modern reading is about motivation and about the appetite for a project rather than for food.

The genuinely interesting fact is the biological one. A person holding a piece of apatite is holding the same mineral family their own skeleton is made from, and that is a stranger and better thought than anything the shop cards offer.

How it is worked with

Work with the biological fact rather than the shop reading. Apatite is the mineral of bone and tooth, of structure that is grown rather than assembled, and that suits questions about what you are actually built on.

Physically it is a collector's stone. Hardness 5 with brittleness means it scratches, chips and is easily damaged, and it should not go in a ring worn daily.

It is also heat-sensitive and dissolves in acid, so no ultrasonic cleaning, no steam, and no household cleaners.

Neon blue-green Madagascan material is worth seeing in person, since photographs consistently oversaturate it.

For anyone who wants the appetite reading in a durable stone, carnelian at hardness 7 carries a similar meaning with none of the fragility.

Buying it honestly

Most gem apatite is untreated, though some blue material is heated to improve colour.

The main issues are substitution and expectation. Apatite is sold in place of paraiba tourmaline at the neon blue-green end, and it is far softer and much cheaper, which matters if you are paying paraiba prices.

Glass, synthetic spinel and blue topaz appear as substitutes.

Some cat's eye apatite is imitated with fibre-optic glass, which shows a suspiciously sharp band and a honeycomb pattern on the cut end.

The word apatite is also applied loosely in the tumbled-stone market to material that is largely matrix with little gem content.

Because it is soft, secondhand apatite jewellery is often visibly abraded, and that damage cannot be polished out without losing material.

Handle with care

Soft at 5 and brittle: it scratches, chips and abrades easily. Dissolves in acid and is damaged by heat. No ultrasonic cleaning, no steam, no household cleaners. Not a ring stone.
