October has two modern birthstones and one very good story. Opal was prized in Rome, then destroyed commercially by a single Walter Scott novel in 1829, then rehabilitated by Queen Victoria. It is the clearest documented case anywhere of a stone's meaning being changed by a book.

Opal and tourmaline, both in the modern list.

Opal is not a crystal. It is packed spheres of hydrated silica, and where those spheres are regularly sized and arranged they diffract light into moving colour, an explanation only established in 1964 with electron microscopy. Opal contains up to twenty per cent water, which is why it can craze if it dries out or suffers thermal shock.

Tourmaline is the most chemically variable common gem, a boron silicate that accepts so many elements that a single crystal can change colour along its length or between core and rind. That is what makes watermelon tourmaline, pink inside a green skin.

Tourmaline was added to October largely because it offers a durable alternative in nearly any colour, which suits a month whose primary stone is fragile.

The older lists and the novel

Traditional lists give October opal, with aquamarine or beryl as alternates in some regional versions.

The opal story is worth telling accurately. Pliny praised it highly, and Roman writers record a senator who chose exile over surrendering an opal to Mark Antony. Then in 1829 Walter Scott published Anne of Geierstein, in which a woman's opal loses its fire when touched with holy water and she dies soon after. Within a year or two the European opal market had reportedly collapsed, and opal carried a reputation for bad luck through the nineteenth century. Queen Victoria worked against it deliberately, wearing opals and giving them as wedding presents, and Australian discoveries from the 1870s eventually rebuilt the trade.

Tourmaline has a smaller but similar story. Californian pink tourmaline was exported in quantity to China because the Dowager Empress Cixi liked it; when the Qing dynasty fell in 1911, the market went with it.

What these are like to own

Opal is demanding. It is soft at 5.5, contains water, and can craze if exposed to heat, dry air or sudden temperature change. Solid opal can be worn with care; doublets and triplets, which are thin opal slices backed and capped with other material, must never be soaked, because water destroys the glue.

Synthetic opal has been made since the 1970s and shows a columnar or lizard-skin pattern under magnification. Ethiopian hydrophane opal absorbs water and can change appearance temporarily when wet, which is normal for that material and startling if you do not expect it.

Tourmaline at 7.5 is much easier. It should not be steam cleaned or put in an ultrasonic bath, since included material can fracture, but it takes daily wear well otherwise.

Tourmaline is already the durable answer within the month, and it comes in essentially every colour, which makes October the easiest month to substitute within.

October covers Libra and Scorpio. Zodiac lists give Libra opal, agreeing with the calendar, and Scorpio obsidian, topaz or malachite.

In Jyotish, Libra answers to Venus and diamond, and Scorpio to Mars and red coral. Neither matches the month list, which is the normal state of affairs.
