Sun Conjunct Mercury
Sun conjunct Mercury means your thinking and your sense of self sit together, so ideas feel personal and you speak from the centre of who you are. Because Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, this is the only major aspect the pair can form, and a common one. The tradition grades it by distance: cazimi in the heart of the Sun, combust within 8.5°, under the beams within 15°.
Mind inside the Sun's light: thinking that carries your whole identity, bringing focus at the cost of distance.

Mercury beside the Sun
Mercury orbits close to the Sun and, seen from Earth, never moves more than about 28° away from it. Sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions between the two are impossible, so the conjunction is the only major aspect this pair can make. This chart counts it within 8°.
Mercury is the neutral planet. The tradition says it takes on the nature of whatever it touches, and it belongs to either sect depending on its position: diurnal when it rises before the Sun as a morning star, nocturnal when it sets after the Sun as an evening star. Joined to the Sun, the planet of thought and speech absorbs the Sun's purpose. Your mind works in the service of your identity, and your identity shows itself through ideas and words.
Thinking with your whole self
From within, this conjunction makes thought feel personal. Ideas feel like part of you, held close. You tend to speak with conviction and to know your own mind, and conversations about what you believe can feel like conversations about who you are.
That closeness gives energy and focus. It also makes objectivity harder. When someone criticises your reasoning, it can land as criticism of you, and you may find it difficult to notice the assumptions behind your own thinking.
Cazimi, the heart of the Sun
The tradition grades this conjunction by distance, and the closest grade is the strongest. Within 17′ of the Sun, about the radius of the solar disk, Mercury is cazimi, from an Arabic phrase meaning in the heart of the Sun. Medieval authors compared it to a counsellor seated beside the king, no longer overpowered and now speaking with the king's authority. A cazimi Mercury is read as unusual clarity of mind and a voice that carries weight.
Outside cazimi, the conjunction still gives focus, a strong personal voice and a mind that works hard on what matters to you. Writers, speakers and teachers with this placement often find their best material in their own experience.
Combust and under the beams
From 17′ out to 8.5°, Mercury is combust, burned by the Sun. Traditional astrologers counted combustion as a serious weakness: the planet cannot act independently, and the Sun swallows its significations. Since this chart's orb is 8°, every Sun–Mercury conjunction it lists is either cazimi or combust. Psychologically, combustion is read as thinking that struggles to separate from ego, brilliant from your own angle and slow to take another.
From 8.5° to 15° Mercury is under the beams, hidden in the Sun's glare but less afflicted; some older authors extend this zone to 17°. Two exemptions soften combustion. A Mercury in its own signs, Gemini or Virgo, was held to keep its strength, and several authorities did not count a conjunction across a sign boundary as true combustion.
Sun conjunct Mercury in love
In relationships, you tend to need a partner you can talk to about ideas, plans and the meaning of things, because thinking is how you connect. You may express affection through conversation, letters and shared interests.
The difficulty is listening. When your words and your identity are fused, a partner's different view can feel like a challenge to you, and you may argue to win when they wanted to be heard. Compatibility grows when you practise asking questions and repeating back what you heard before offering your own view.
A voice that works
At work, this conjunction suits fields where your own voice is the product: writing, teaching, speaking, journalism, sales, law, advising and any role that rewards a clear point of view. You are often at your best explaining what you believe. Editing, peer review and honest colleagues supply the outside view a combust Mercury lacks, and they make your work stronger.
How close is close
Within this chart's 8°, distance changes the reading more than for most aspects. A Mercury within 17′ is cazimi, rare and strong. A Mercury within a degree or two is heavily combust, the mind fully merged with the self. Toward 8° it is still combust but gaining some room, and beyond 8.5° it is under the beams: a Mercury 10° from the Sun has no conjunction here but is still read as veiled.
Direction counts as well. At the inferior conjunction Mercury is retrograde and passes between Earth and Sun; at the superior conjunction it is direct and lies beyond the Sun. Some astrologers read the first as inward, reflective thinking and the second as outward and fluent.
Giving the mind some room
Growth comes from putting distance between your ideas and your identity. Write something and come back to it a week later. Argue the other side of a position you hold. Notice when a disagreement feels like an attack, and treat that feeling as information about the conjunction before you answer.
In the Tarot, the pair is The Sun and The Magician. The Magician's skill with words and tools is lit by the Sun's will, and the task is to keep that skill your servant: precise, useful and open to correction.

- When did criticism of my ideas feel like criticism of me?
- Who gives me an honest outside view of my thinking?
- What would I write or say if I trusted my voice and stayed open to correction?
