The Librarian

Tarot: Wednesday, September 16

A card drawn from one of three decks

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Librarian

The Tarot of New York City
The Librarian

The Librarian sits between the two stone lions on Fifth Avenue, under a ceiling painted like a sky, and answers questions with a call number. She is the High Priestess in the city's own dress: the keeper of what was written down and then forgotten. Today the useful thing is not to act but to look up. Something you are treating as unknown is on record, and somebody, possibly you, wrote it down. Go and read it before you decide. The answer will be quieter than you wanted and more exact.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You do not look things up, you find out by doing them. Today look it up. The Librarian has the answer on a shelf and it is faster than the experiment you were about to run.

Taurus

You trust what you can hold and this card deals in what is known but not held. Sit with the record for an hour today. Some facts are heavier than objects.

Gemini

You will ask the Librarian six questions and not wait for any answer. Ask one. Then go to the call number she gives you and read the whole thing, not the first page.

Cancer

Memory is your instrument and the Librarian keeps the city's. Today, check yours against the record. What you remember and what was written down may differ, and the difference is the day's work.

Leo

The reading room is silent and nobody looks up when you enter. Let that be a relief rather than an insult. Today's answer is found alone at a desk, not received in front of anyone.

Virgo

Research is your home ground and the card sends you there. The only caution is the ceiling: painted like a sky so that people remember to look up from the page. Do, once.

Libra

You will want a second opinion and the Librarian gives call numbers, not opinions. Read the source yourself today and form the view. Consulting can wait until you have one.

Scorpio

Hidden archives are your natural terrain and this one is public. Whatever you have been assuming is secret may simply be uncatalogued. Look in the obvious place first.

Sagittarius

Patience with a reading room is not your gift. Give it an hour anyway. The thing you want to set off toward has a map on the third floor and it is worth knowing the route.

Capricorn

You keep good records and consult them rarely. Today consult them. The decision you are approaching was already made once, by you, and the reasoning is written down somewhere.

Aquarius

The city's memory is a system and you like systems. The card asks you to use it rather than admire it. Find the one document that settles the question and stop theorising.

Pisces

Intuition is what the Librarian runs on and what you run on. Today she asks you to check it against a shelf. Your read is probably right, and the record is what lets you say so out loud.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You know the city's shortcuts and the Librarian knows its records. Today the record wins. What you are about to work out by instinct is already filed, and reading it saves the whole afternoon.

Ox

You will go and find the answer and it will take the time it takes. Good. This card has no shortcut and does not pretend to. One thorough hour beats a day of half-remembered facts.

Tiger

A reading room is your least natural habitat. Spend the morning in one anyway. The thing you want to charge at has a history and the history changes the angle of attack.

Rabbit

Quiet, exact and unhurried is the whole day. You are made for it. The only instruction is to write down what you find, because the Librarian's answer does not stay in memory.

Dragon

You want the answer from a person who matters and it comes from a call number. Go to the shelf yourself today. Authority in this card sits with the record, not the reader.

Snake

You are the Librarian's natural reader: patient, private, exact. The card adds one thing. When you find it, tell the person who asked. Knowledge held is only half of the position.

Horse

You will read the first page and leave. Read to the end today. The card is patient and the answer is in the last chapter, where the people who left early never see it.

Goat

You will ask the Librarian and then ask four friends what they think of the answer. The answer stands without them. Read it, trust it, and leave the poll for something that needs one.

Monkey

You will find three interesting things on the way to the one you needed. Note them and come back. The card gives you a single call number today and rewards you for following it.

Rooster

You will check the record for errors and find some. Fine. Then use it anyway, because a slightly imperfect written source still outranks a perfectly confident memory.

Dog

The answer you find today may not be the one somebody hoped for. Bring it to them exactly as written. Loyalty in this card means the accurate call number, not the comfortable one.

Pig

You would rather ask than read. Today read. The Librarian's desk is where the pleasant assumptions go to be checked, and one of yours is about to be.
