Raidho is riding, and the Anglo-Saxon poem is dry about it: riding is easy for every warrior in the hall, and very hard for the one on the horse over the long miles. The rune is motion with a route and a rhythm somebody has to keep. Today you are on the horse. The stretch ahead is unglamorous and the planning for it was the easy part. Keep the pace you can hold, not the one you can start at, and do not stop to discuss the road with people who are sitting in the hall.
Runes: Thursday, October 22
A rune from each of the four scripts
This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.
Reið is riding, and the poem notes that it is worst for the horse. Progress today is being paid for in somebody's effort, and the rune asks whether you know whose. If it is yours, check the pace is sustainable. If it is somebody else's, say so out loud rather than enjoying the smoothness of the journey without comment.
Rad is the English riding, and the poem draws the line the Elder rune only implies: easy in the hall, hard on the road. It is the difference between talking about the journey and being on it. Today the talking is over. Whatever you have been describing to people, the day asks you to actually cover some of it, at the horse's pace, with nobody watching. Progress here is measured in miles rather than in plans, and the miles are slow.
Ruis is redness, the kennings say: the redness of faces, the intensest blushing, the reddening of shame. It is what the body says before the person does. Today, watch for the flush, in yourself or across a table. Somebody's face will tell the truth a beat before their sentence, and the rune says trust the face. If it is your own, let it. The blush is an honest signal in a day that may not offer many, and the effort of hiding it is where the actual shame lives.
For your star sign
The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.
Aries
Riding: motion with a route and a rhythm somebody has to keep. Set the pace you can sustain rather than the one you can start.
Taurus
A journey rather than a destination. Your rhythm is the whole asset and today it is the right instrument.
Gemini
Motion with a route, which is the part you skip. Decide the route before you enjoy the speed.
Cancer
Somebody is doing the actual riding. If it is you, the horse's condition is your responsibility too. Tend it rather than worrying at it.
Leo
The journey is public and the pace is yours to set. Set it for the distance rather than the first hour.
Virgo
Route, rhythm, and maintenance. All three are yours today and only one is interesting. Check it improves the work, not the record.
Libra
Motion with a route and a partner. Agree the pace rather than negotiating it every mile. State your own position once, plainly.
Scorpio
A journey with a fixed route, which you will want to revise mid-way. Hold the route today. Say it rather than holding it in reserve.
Sagittarius
Your element, with one addition: the rhythm has to be sustainable rather than exhilarating. Choose the direction before the speed.
Capricorn
Motion with a route and a schedule, which is your competence entirely. Just check the pace is humane.
Aquarius
A route somebody else designed. Follow it today and redesign it after you have arrived. Deal with the person, not the principle.
Pisces
A journey with a rhythm to keep. Drifting is not riding; hold the pace deliberately. Put it in words somebody can answer.
For your Chinese animal
The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Rat
A journey with a route, and you will want to know the whole road first. Set out with the first stage clear.
Ox
Motion at a sustainable rhythm, which is your natural pace. Hold it and let others tire. Steady beats sudden here.
Tiger
You will ride hard for an hour and lame the horse. Set the pace for the distance. Once, deliberately, and then stop.
Rabbit
A journey and you would rather stay. Go, at a rhythm you can keep, and stop when you said you would.
Dragon
The journey is visible and the pace is yours. Set it for the distance rather than the audience.
Snake
Route and rhythm both matter and you will optimise only the route. Watch the pace too. Consider whether it is more useful said.
Horse
Your element exactly. The one addition is a route, which you tend to leave to chance. Pick one before the energy picks for you.
Goat
A journey at somebody else's pace. Say early if it is too fast rather than enduring it. Ask before you are emptied.
Monkey
You will change the route three times. Keep the first one today. Ask whether it needs solving at all.
Rooster
Route, rhythm, maintenance. You will do all three properly, so just make the pace humane. Narrower question, not a firmer one.
Dog
A journey with somebody depending on the rhythm. Keep it steady for their sake. Aim it at what actually happened.
Pig
A journey with a route, which is exactly what you tend to omit. Fix the route before you set out.
