One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Preponderance of the Great

Hexagram 28 is a heavy beam on thin supports: four strong lines crowded into the middle and two weak ones at the ends. The Judgment says the ridgepole is already sagging to breaking and still tells you to move, because staying under a failing structure is not one of the options. It adds that it helps to have somewhere to go. Shore up the foundation with unglamorous care and accept that ordinary methods may not apply. If you are holding this up for somebody else, the fourth line sets the condition: help with no agenda in it.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will fix it fast and visibly. The repair that holds in hexagram 28 is the dry poplar sprouting at the root: underneath, unglamorous, nobody watching. Also note that the Judgment wants you to have somewhere to go.

Taurus

You will hold the sagging beam in place indefinitely. The Judgment says it helps to have somewhere to go, which rules out standing still under it. Put the weight on the root, then move.

Gemini

You will find a lighter way to describe the strain. The figure is a structural diagram and four strong lines are already crowded into the middle. Words do not redistribute load. Shore the ends.

Cancer

You will take the strain on behalf of the household. The fourth line sets the one condition on helping, which is that the help carries no agenda. Help that wants something back fails under this weight.

Leo

You will be the ridgepole. The Image asks you to stand alone without fear, which is not the same as standing underneath. Extraordinary conditions suspend the usual supports, including the ones you were going to provide.

Virgo

You will reinforce the parts that show. The dry poplar sprouts at the root, and that is where the repair takes in this figure. Go under the structure and work where the finish will never be seen.

Libra

You will distribute the load evenly. The shape does not allow it: the middle is heavy and the two ends are thin. Strengthen the ends, and accept that the balance you want is not on offer here.

Scorpio

You will wade in over your head. The top line does exactly that, and the verdict is misfortune and no blame in the same breath. Ask whether this is the one thing worth that, because the book will not tell you.

Sagittarius

Having somewhere to go is the easy half of this Judgment. The unglamorous work underneath is the half you will leave undone, and the ridgepole is already bending. Do the dull part before you choose the destination.

Capricorn

You will draft the replacement structure while standing under the failing one. Ordinary methods are suspended in extraordinary conditions. Get out from under the beam first, then build.

Aquarius

You will let it come down to see what was really holding it up. The classic shores the root instead and calls these conditions extraordinary, which is its reason for suspending the usual advice, not for abandoning the building.

Pisces

You will keep something beautiful going that cannot regenerate. The withered poplar flowers and the verdict is no blame and no praise, because nothing comes of it. Put the effort at the root, where it sprouts.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will move the valuables out and leave the beam to it. The Judgment does want you to have somewhere to go, and it also wants the foundation shored. Do the second thing before you pack.

Ox

You will assume the load is yours to carry and say nothing. The figure says the ends fail, not the middle. The work is under you, not on you, and there is nothing heroic in it.

Tiger

Extraordinary times suit you and the Image's solitude does not. Standing alone without fear is the whole instruction, and it comes with withdrawing from the world without regret. Neither part involves force.

Rabbit

You will step out from under it quietly, which the Judgment permits. What it adds is a destination. Having somewhere to go is stated as a condition of success, so choose the place before you leave.

Dragon

Standing alone without fear comes easily to you. Withdrawing from the world without regret does not, and the Image asks for both in one sentence. The beam does not need your presence, only its root repaired.

Snake

You can see precisely where the beam will give and you will say nothing until it does. The Judgment is not neutral about this: it tells you to move, and it tells you the sagging is already happening.

Horse

You will be gone before it goes, which the figure allows. What it does not allow is leaving the people underneath without telling them what you saw. Say it, then go where you have decided to go.

Goat

You will hold it up for someone and resent them for it. The fourth line makes the condition explicit: help without an agenda, or the help fails. Decide which one you are offering before you take the weight.

Monkey

You will improvise a prop. The strain is in the thin ends of the figure and a clever prop under the middle adds to it. Do the dull work at the root and keep a destination in mind.

Rooster

You will inspect the beam and record the finding. It is already sagging to breaking, so the inspection is complete. The Judgment moves straight to action, and the action is shoring the root.

Dog

You will stand under it because someone you care about is under it too. Staying beneath a failing structure is not one of the options the Judgment offers. Get them out, then go back for the root.

Pig

You will avoid looking up. The lake has risen above the trees, which is the whole image, and the beam above you is bending. Look, then put the effort at the root and pick somewhere to go.
