I Ching: Wednesday, October 7

One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Opposition

Hexagram 38 is fire above a lake, one rising and one sinking, the two of them moving apart. The whole Judgment is four words. In small matters, good fortune. Nothing large will land while purposes are crossed, so keep the scale down. The Image declines the obvious remedy: it does not ask for harmony, it asks you to stay yourself inside the company you are in and hold the difference without hostility. Then the top line. Someone approaches, you see a filthy pig and a cart of demons, the bow comes up, and it is a suitor.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Crossed purposes make you want either the reconciliation or the fight, immediately. The entire Judgment is that small matters bring good fortune. Keep it small, and do not chase what has already moved away from you.

Taurus

You will dig into the difference and hold it against the other person. The Image asks you to keep yourself inside the fellowship without the hostility, which is the harder of the two halves for you.

Gemini

You will explain both positions until they agree. Hexagram 38 is not after agreement. Fire rises and the lake sinks, and the figure asks you to hold the divergence rather than to talk it closed.

Cancer

Estrangement reads as abandonment and you will withdraw first to get it over with. At the top line the approaching figure looked like a cart of demons and turned out to be a suitor. Do not shoot.

Leo

You will need the room united, and the Image refuses to supply it. The noble person stays themselves amid all fellowship, which means the difference is kept rather than dissolved. Keep yours without making it a performance.

Virgo

You will establish who is wrong. At the top line nothing about the situation changed except the perception, and then the rain fell. The error to look for may be in the reading rather than in the other person.

Libra

You will harmonise, and the price will be your own position. Fire above and lake below is a difference the figure wants preserved. Stay yourself inside the company, courteously and without giving your ground away.

Scorpio

You see the filthy pig and the cart full of demons and you keep the bow up. The line has the bow come down, because it is a suitor. Test the reading before you act on it.

Sagittarius

You will declare it irreconcilable and leave. Small matters go through here, and one of them is the irregular meeting that arrives later. Do not chase what has gone, and do not close the door either.

Capricorn

You will fix the estrangement with a structural arrangement. Large undertakings fail under this figure. Something small and specific will hold where the agreement and the settlement will not.

Aquarius

Divergence suits you, so the Image reads as permission. The part that is not permission is the meeting, which arrives in an irregular form and asks to be recognised. Stay open to the wagon that looks wrong.

Pisces

You will take on the other position to end the discomfort of holding two. The whole counsel of hexagram 38 is that difference is held rather than dissolved. Stay yourself amid the fellowship.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will assemble a package that settles everything at once. Small matters bring good fortune and large ones do not. Trade the one small item and put the package back in the drawer.

Ox

You will wait out the crossed purposes with your position unchanged, which is half right. The other half is the top line, where the approach that looked like a raid was a suitor. Waiting with the bow raised is not waiting.

Tiger

Anything approaching under this figure reads to you as a raid. The bow comes up in the text and then goes down. Nothing had changed except what was seen, and the rain fell straight after.

Rabbit

You will slip out of the crossed room. The meeting in this figure comes in an irregular form and the isolated person almost missed it. Hold your own position where you can still be reached.

Dragon

You will require the apology before the meeting. At the top line no apology was offered; the perception corrected itself and the tension broke. Keep your own ground and let the approach be strange.

Snake

You read the demons in the cart accurately and the suitor not at all. The figure rewards the second reading. Small matters succeed, so test the misread with something minor rather than with a decision.

Horse

You will leave the room where nothing is landing. Fire and lake keep moving apart whether you stay or go. Keep the scale small and stay somewhere you can be found, because the meeting in this figure comes looking.

Goat

You will apologise for something you did not do, to close a rift that the figure does not ask you to close. Keep your own position honestly. The meeting here arrives in its own shape, and you do not have to buy it.

Monkey

You will make a joke of the estrangement and be pleased with it. The joke is a small matter, which this figure permits, and it is not the meeting. Stay recognisable when the odd approach comes.

Rooster

You will correct the misunderstanding point by point. The top line corrects nothing and everything changes, because the pig on the road was never a pig. Check your own reading first.

Dog

You will take a side and guard it, and the side will need guarding less than you think. The bow came down in the text because the intruder was a suitor. Hold your own position, not a border.

Pig

You will smooth it over and lose the difference in the smoothing. The Image keeps individuality inside fellowship on purpose. Small matters are where the good fortune is; leave the big harmony alone.
