At a glance
- Calculated from
- The consonants of the full birth name
- Also called
- Outer Self, Quiet Self
- Weight in a reading
- Core; read against the Soul Urge
- Visible to others
- Almost entirely; this is the visible position
- Master numbers kept
- Yes, 11, 22 and 33
- The Y question
- A consonant when it glides, as in Maya
How to calculate your Personality
- Write out the full birth name and mark the consonants, everything that is not A, E, I, O or U.
- Decide each Y by sound, the same rule as for the Soul Urge: a consonant where it glides into a vowel, as in Maya, and a vowel where it carries the sound, as in Lynn.
- Convert the marked consonants using the Pythagorean cipher: B K T = 2, C L U = 3 for the consonantal letters in each column, and so on across A J S = 1 to I R = 9.
- Add them all together.
- Reduce to a single digit, stopping at 11, 22 or 33, and keep the two-digit form if the total was 13, 14, 16 or 19.
Worked example
Maya June Ellerton
| MAYA | M 4 + Y 7, the Y counts here | 11 |
|---|---|---|
| JUNE | J 1 + N 5 | 6 |
| ELLERTON | L 3 + L 3 + R 9 + T 2 + N 5 | 22 |
| Total | 11 + 6 + 22 = 39 → 3 + 9 = 12 → 1 + 2 | 3 |
Personality 3
The part totals here happen to be 11 and 22, which are master numbers, and neither counts. Master numbers and karmic debts are read on the core total only, never on name parts. The figure that matters is 39, which reduces through 12 to 3.
What it describes
The Personality is the outside of the name and the outside of the person: the impression made in the first minute, before anyone has any information.
It is narrower than the word suggests. This is not a description of character but of surface, the part of someone that is available to a stranger, and the tradition is clear that it can differ completely from what is underneath. The older name, Quiet Self, points at something specific: this is the version of the person that operates without being asserted, the one that arrives in a room before they say anything.
It is also the filter. Whatever else is true of someone, other people have to get past this first, and if the Personality is forbidding then the Soul Urge behind it will take years to become visible.
Where it comes from
The consonants, on the same phonetic reasoning that gives the vowels to the Soul Urge. Consonants shape and interrupt the sound rather than carrying it. They are what gives a name its edges, and the tradition assigns them the edges of the person.
The pairing is arithmetically exact and worth stating plainly: the vowels give the Soul Urge, the consonants give the Personality, and together they give the Expression. Three numbers, one name, and only two of them independent. That relationship is the tidiest piece of construction in the whole system and it is not an accident.
As with the Soul Urge, Y is decided by sound, and a Y assigned one way lands in this number and the other way lands in the other.
How to read it
Read the Personality against the Soul Urge, and the size of the gap is the reading.
A small gap describes someone legible: what people meet is roughly what is there, and relationships start from an accurate position. A large gap describes someone misread by default, and the specific flavour depends on the direction. A warm Personality over a private Soul Urge produces someone people feel close to who does not feel close to them. A reserved Personality over a Soul Urge that wants company produces the opposite, and it is the lonelier of the two.
The second use is practical rather than psychological. The Personality number describes the impression a person makes before doing anything, which is directly useful for anyone whose work involves being read quickly: interviews, negotiation, teaching, sales, first sessions with a client.
Common misreadings
The most common error is treating this as the main personality reading of a chart. It is the surface only, and the Expression and Soul Urge carry far more.
The second is expecting it to match the person's self-image. It rarely does, because self-image is built from the inside and this position describes the outside. When someone says their Personality number is wrong, the useful move is to ask a stranger instead. This is the only position in the chart where that check is available, and it is worth using.
The third is the Y rule again, which moves value between this number and the Soul Urge. The fourth is forgetting that the Personality changes if a name changes, so a person who has gone by a different surname for thirty years has a second Personality number that is doing most of the practical work.
How it interacts with the rest of the chart
The Personality is the door to the rest of the chart, and everything else is read as being behind it.
Against the Expression, it says whether people can see what the person can do. A Personality 3 over an Expression 4 is someone who reads as light and turns out to be substantial, which usually works in their favour. A Personality 8 over an Expression 2 is the reverse, and describes someone who has to spend energy managing expectations they never set.
Against the Life Path, the Personality says whether the person looks like they belong in their own circumstances. A mismatch here is the reading behind a common complaint: being persistently treated as the wrong sort of person for the situation one is actually in.
Across the systems
Pythagorean. Standard modern Western practice, and the fourth of the core positions in almost every English-language treatment.
Chaldean. No equivalent. The vowel and consonant split does not exist in that tradition, which reads the name whole and weights the compound total.
Hebrew. Structurally, a Hebrew name total is closer to a Personality number than to a Soul Urge, since the written script is consonantal and gematria works from the letters that are written. The resemblance is a coincidence of writing systems rather than a shared doctrine, and Hebrew practice draws no interpretive conclusion of this kind.
Vedic. Ank Jyotish does not split names. Where a name number is used, it is the whole name and it is secondary to the date-derived figures.
A note on the split's age. The vowel and consonant division is not ancient. It belongs to the same early twentieth-century Western synthesis that produced the master numbers and the karmic debts, and it is best understood as part of that layer rather than as anything inherited from Pythagoras.
Every number as a Personality
One line each for the first impression the number makes. Follow any of them for the full reading.
- Personality 1 Capability. People assume this person is in charge before finding out whether they are.
- Personality 2 Approachability. Strangers tell this person things, and often assume a softness that may not be there.
- Personality 3 Brightness. Easy company, and frequently underestimated because of it.
- Personality 4 Solidity. Trusted early and hard to read, with people unsure what is going on underneath.
- Personality 5 Energy. Interesting immediately, and assumed to be less reliable than they are.
- Personality 6 Warmth and dependability. People bring this person their problems within ten minutes of meeting them.
- Personality 7 Reserve. Hard to place, sometimes read as intimidating, rarely obvious.
- Personality 8 Authority. Deferred to before anyone knows anything, which is useful and isolating in equal measure.
- Personality 9 Dignity with slight distance. Impressive, and people are not sure they know them.
- Personality 11/2 Presence. Noticed without anyone being able to say why, and credited with more depth than the person feels they have.
- Personality 22/4 Competence and a certain unreachability. Assumed capable of more than they are being asked for, usually correctly.
- Personality 33/6 Warmth with weight behind it. Trusted quickly, and brought things.
- Personality 13/4 Capable but somehow unfinished, with people waiting for them to start.
- Personality 14/5 Exciting and provisional. People enjoy them and do not plan around them.
- Personality 16/7 Impressive and slightly unreal, with people sometimes surprised later.
- Personality 19/1 Self-contained and capable, so nobody offers support because it visibly is not wanted.
A Personality cannot be 0, since every consonant carries a value.
Questions for reflection
- What do people assume about me in the first minute, and how often is it right?
- What have I stopped explaining because the assumption is easier to live with?
- Is the gap between how I am read and what I want small enough to be crossed?
