The Pinwheel Seller

The Tarot of Beijing
The Pinwheel Seller

The seller comes down the fairground lane with a bamboo pole stacked with paper pinwheels, and every one of them is spinning a different direction in the same wind. Today has wind in it. Something that was still yesterday starts turning: a chance meeting in the crowd, an offer arriving out of order, a delay that puts you where you needed to be. Hold the schedule the way he holds the pole, loosely and high. If the morning turns against you, that is the same wind and it has not finished. You cannot choose the weather. You can choose which way you hold the thing you are carrying.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You would rather make the wind than wait for it. The seller commands nothing; he carries his pole where the wind can find it, and that is the skill on offer. Push at a door already swinging and you will hold it shut. Stand in the crowded lane instead, say yes early, and let the turn happen at its own speed.

Taurus

Change arrives as a nuisance in your ledger, and it arrives anyway. Dozens of pinwheels on one pole, all turning differently, none of them asking permission. You are not required to enjoy it. You are asked not to fold yours and put it away. Keep one plan loose enough to be rearranged, then look at what the rearranging hands you.

Gemini

A day with wind in it suits you, right up to the point where it becomes an excuse to chase every rattle in the lane. The seller carries one pole. Follow the single turn worth following and let the other fortunes spin for other people. Luck sampled twelve times is luck nobody carried home.

Cancer

Your reflex when the lane fills up is to go home and shut the gate. This card puts the whole fair at eye level: children reaching, old men laughing under the pine, a wedding cart passing behind, and none of it aimed at you. Stay out in the crowd past the comfortable point. The chance meeting is the mechanism, and it does not happen indoors.

Leo

You want the fortune to arrive with your name on it, in front of people. The seller stands half hidden behind his own pole and seems content there. What turns for you may turn quietly, inside somebody else's conversation, for the price of a copper coin. Take the small paper thing without first checking who saw you take it.

Virgo

Your plan for the day was good, and wind does not consult plans. This is not disorder but a different order: one weather, many angles, results arriving out of sequence. Let the schedule be rearranged once without treating it as a failure of preparation, then look hard at what the rearrangement put in front of you.

Libra

An unexpected turn will hand you something to decide, and your instinct is to hold it up to the light until the fair closes. Pinwheels spin while the wind blows and not after. Take the offer that is in the lane now, on the information you have, and accept that the comparison you wanted was never on the pole.

Scorpio

Chance offends you slightly. You would rather be the cause. Today runs on coincidence, and the card notes without judgment that the pickpocket also works the lucky days. Keep your eyes open in the crowd and your grip loose at the same time. Suspicion that refuses every unexplained gift will refuse the real one along with the rest.

Sagittarius

This is your weather, and that is the risk in it. The seller does not chase the wind across the city; he stands in the lane where it passes with his wheels already up. One good gust does not make the whole season yours to spend. Catch the turn actually in front of you and keep hold of the pole.

Capricorn

You built the staircase and the day brings a gust. Something will move sooner or faster than your timeline allows. The temple gate behind the crowd is your part of the picture, the fixed thing the fair is held beside: let the luck change the sequence without changing the aim. Take the offer even though it arrived early.

Aquarius

You will want a theory of the wind, and the card gives you only what it moves. Ink spirals, rattling paper, a crowd at eye level, no mechanism shown. Treat an unexplained turn as usable rather than filing it until it makes sense. A pinwheel does not have to be understood to be carried home.

Pisces

Signs will come easily to you, and so will the drift. Every pinwheel on the pole means something, which is close to meaning nothing. Take the one solid coincidence, the meeting or the message, and answer it practically: a reply sent, a name written down, a time agreed with somebody.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will see the turn before anybody else in the lane, and your instinct will be to take several. One pinwheel carried home was the whole custom. Spot the opening early, which you will, then stop at the one you can actually use. What you hear rattling is the fair, not a shortage.

Ox

You would rather earn it than catch it, and a day of favourable wind looks like nothing you can push against. The seller works too; he walks that lane with the pole all day. Keep going and let the results arrive out of order for once. Effort you banked months ago may come back in a shape you did not schedule.

Tiger

You want the change to be a charge, and this one is a gust. Nothing here needs fighting for, because the wind is already doing the work. Stand in the lane, take the offer when it reaches you, and spend the surplus energy on being ready rather than on forcing a wheel that is already turning.

Rabbit

A crowded fair is exactly what you avoid, and this card distributes its luck in crowds. Children reaching up, old men laughing, a procession pushing past: your fortune is somewhere in the press of it. Accept one invitation into the noise. Politeness practised from the end of the lane gets nothing off the pole.

Dragon

You are watching the sky for something cosmic, and this deck put fate on a bamboo pole for the price of a copper coin. The wheel here is dozens of paper toys and one of them is yours. Take the small cheap turn seriously. Fortune at this fair arrives without a canopy, although the wedding cart does pass behind.

Snake

You prefer to move once, when the pattern has shown itself. The pattern here is weather: invisible, shown only by what it moves. There is nothing here to read, only something to catch. Act while the wheel is turning, and forgive yourself the analysis you did not get to finish.

Horse

Wind and motion are your element, so this is an easy day with one hard instruction in it: the seller stays in the lane. He does not run after the gust. Pick the place where the luck passes, a market, a room, a conversation, and hold it long enough for the offer to find you.

Goat

Unexpected change reads as instability to you, and you will look for somebody to steady it. Notice the pine leaning over the crowd, the one thing in the picture that does not spin. Find your own fixed point and let the rest rattle. A turn in your favour is still a turn when it arrives unannounced.

Monkey

A fair full of shifting fortune is your playground and you will work the angles on all of it. The seller has no angle; he lifts the pole and lets the wind decide. Take one piece of luck straight, without improving it. Cleverness applied to a gust mostly just folds the paper.

Rooster

The schedule slips, the lane is chaos, the pickpocket is right there, and you will want to announce every bit of it. Nobody is disputing your accuracy. Lift the pinwheel anyway. Something arriving out of order is not the same as something arriving wrong.

Dog

You will check whether the sudden good turn is deserved, whether it is yours, and whether it is fair to the others in the lane. The seller sells to whoever holds up a coin. Take the offer without auditing it first. Luck falling unevenly is this card's plain statement about the world, not a debt with your name on it.

Pig

You will enjoy the fair thoroughly and forget you came for a pinwheel. The turn itself is one specific thing: an offer, a meeting, a name heard in the crowd. Catch it between the food and the laughing. Taking both the pleasure and the chance is possible, and taking only the pleasure is what usually happens.
