Eight of Cups

Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
Eight of Cups

A figure in a red cloak walks away from eight cups stacked at the water's edge, toward the mountains, under a moon with a face. The cups are full and he is leaving them. The Eight of Cups is the deliberate walk away from something that is finished, or good enough, or simply not it. Today the satisfaction with the status quo has run out and you know it. Leave the cups standing and go. What you are walking toward is not visible yet, and that is the moon's point: enough light to walk by, not enough to see the destination. Walk anyway.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You leave things by breaking them. Today leave the cups standing. The Eight of Cups is a departure with no scene, and the scene is what you would add.

Taurus

Eight full cups is everything you would stay for. Today the card says the full cups are not the point. Leave what is complete and comfortable; the mountain is where the next thing is.

Gemini

You will leave and come back for one cup and leave again. Today one departure. Walk, and do not turn around to check whether the cups are still there.

Cancer

Walking away from something full feels like abandonment. It is completion. Today the cups do not need you, and leaving them is how you honour what they were.

Leo

You will announce the departure. Today the figure just walks. The Eight of Cups is a private turn toward the mountains, and the announcement is a way of staying.

Virgo

You will arrange the cups before you go. They are arranged. Today leave them as they are and walk; the tidying is the last excuse.

Libra

You will weigh what you are leaving against what you might find. The card does not show what you find. Today walk without the comparison; the moon is enough.

Scorpio

You have known for months that the cups are finished. Today walk. The knowing without the leaving is the thing the card is tired of.

Sagittarius

This is your card and you have left too early before. Today check the cups are actually full before you go. Then go, toward the mountain, not just away.

Capricorn

Leaving something that works is not in your ledger. Today it is the entry. The cups are full and finished, and the next thing is up the slope in the dark.

Aquarius

You will leave the cups for a principle. Today leave them for a mountain. The Eight of Cups is a direction, not a position, and the walking is the practice.

Pisces

You drift from full cups without deciding to. Today decide to. The figure walks deliberately, in a red cloak, and the deliberateness is the whole card.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will take one cup with you. Take none. Today the Eight of Cups is a clean departure, and the cup in your pocket is what keeps you attached.

Ox

You will stay with the cups because leaving is not in you. Today it is the card. What is finished is finished, and the mountain is the next field.

Tiger

You will leave at a run and knock cups over. Today walk. The departure is deliberate and slow, and the cups stay standing behind you.

Rabbit

The walk toward the mountains in the dark frightens you. The moon is enough. Today take the first ten steps and find the ground is there.

Dragon

Walking away looks like retreat to you. It is completion. Today the eight cups are a finished work, and the mountain is where the next one is.

Snake

You left the cups long ago and let everyone believe you stayed. Today make the walk visible. The Eight of Cups is a departure people can see.

Horse

You leave everything. Today the card asks whether these cups are actually finished. Check once, then go, because this time it is the right leaving.

Goat

You will need permission to leave the cups. Today the card is the permission. Walk toward the mountain without asking who will mind.

Monkey

You will leave the cups to see what happens. Today leave them because they are finished. The Eight of Cups is not curiosity; it is a decision.

Rooster

You will inspect the cups one last time and find a fault to fix. Today do not. They are full and finished, and the fault is the last excuse for staying.

Dog

You will stay because the cups belong to someone. Today ask whether they need you to guard them. Full cups guard themselves; the mountain needs the walker.

Pig

Eight full cups is a feast and you will sit down. Today stand up. The card is the walk away from what is comfortable, and comfort is the hardest cup to leave.
